How to turn on TV with insignia digital converter remote

The digital to analog converters did not exist when the TV was built and the remote programmed. Thus you will have more luck programming the converter box's remote to control the TV. (At least with my converter box, the included remote could only turn on and off the TV. It would only change channels on the converter.)

Most universal remotes only have codes for devices released 6 months or more before the TV was programmed. So a new universal remote will probably control both the TV and the converter box. (Program the converter box using a code for LG or Zenith set top boxes if Insignia isn't listed. LG makes Insignia video products for Best Buy.) The remotes that are programmable by a USB connection to a computer are the fastest to set up.

To program the remote control, press and hold the TV Power button and press the Channel arrow keys until your TV turns off. More details can be found in the owner's manual.

Follows steps below to program your Insignia Converter Box:
1. Turn on your TV using your TV remote control and change its channel to 3 or 4.

2. Turn on the convert box; the blue light on the converter box is on. If you press the power button again, the red light on the converter box will be on, but do Not turn it to Red!!! Your insignia's other buttons will not response if it in red light mode!!!


3. Then press the Menu button on the Insignia remote control. A wizard will appear. The wizard does not appear if your TV is not in channel 3 or 4.

4. Follow the wizard instructions to scan channels.

Well, try it two different ways, as follows: But be sure that the tv-channel that's selected for tuning will be identical to the "output-channel" which you'll then select for the Insignia converter-box. So, if you first select Channel 3 for tuning the tv set, then you must later select Channel 3 on the "Output Channel" choice for the Insignia "set-up" menu. Similarly, if you first select Channel 4 for tuning the tv set, then you must later select Channel 4 on the "Output Channel" choice for the Insignia "set-up" menu. Be consistent! If you find that the Insignia menu-screen does not subsequently appear after tuning the tv to Channel 3, then start-over with Channel 4 as your proper tv-tuned station to initiate the pop-up screen for the Insignia menu.

Now, here's an example that assumes Channel 3 is the proper tuning-station for your tv-set within your particular region: You will first tune your tv-set itself (by means of its handheld tv-remote) to Channel 3. Be sure, however that your Insignia converter-box is turned-on and properly connected to your tv-set and antenna.

On your tv's hand-held remote-controller, you should find a button that serves as its "input selector" -- with a typical descriptor such as "Input" or "Line" or "Video/Antenna." Press that button, and enter successive channel numbers until you get to Channel 3. You may need to press the digits 03 to signify Channel 3. The tv-screen may be colored bright blue at that point.

Then, as you switch to holding your Insignia remote-controller, press the "Menu" button. (Please note that you will need to press hard and firm upon the buttons of the Insignia hand-held in order to get proper responsiveness; a quick touch of the button will not be effective.) After pressing the "Menu" button, the Insignia menu should now appear on the tv-screen. Now, you need to use your Insignia hand-held remote-controller (not the tv hand-held remote-controller again) to travel through the menu-screen to the "Setup" feature. Then, select "Output Channel." Proceed to select Channel 3 -- which will then be printed for you next to the Output Channel feature. Finally, under the same Setup menu, go to "Auto Tuning" -- which will commence a complete scan of all available channels.

Remember, if tuning by Channel 3 is inappropriate for tv-tuning within your particular geographic region, then repeat the above process by substituting Channel 4.

When you are done, you will rely almost exclusively upon the Insignia hand-held remote controller. You do not especially need to use your tv hand-held remote-controller again.
However, be sure to avoid standing in front of your tv-set to change channels by buttons or knobs upon the tv-set itself. Tuning again upon the tv-set itself will negate your prior tv-setting for either Channel 3 or Channel 4 -- and thereby sabotage your working set-up!

I myself incurred chronic anxiety yesterday (June 13), as I was stunned that the Insignia menu-screen did not appear immediately when I pushed "menu" on the Insignia hand-held.
The only buttons that worked on the Insignia handheld remote-controller were the Power-on for the converter-box and the Power-on for the tv-set.

Hold down the TV power button then start pressing the channel up button untill TV turns off. May require many channel up presses.

All you have to do is use the auto tuning function. Your remote control has a menu button, you can get to the feature via the on-screen menu.

If you press the menu button while the box is on and you see no menu, change your television's input to match what the box's output is.

From GUEST: I found this solution in the manual and will perform this task again to see if I can get the tv will be re-recognized again. Give this a try, too.


Remote will not turn on or shut off the TV.
• You must program the converter box remote in order to control your TV power button.
• To program the remote control:

1. Determine if the TV is a model that can be controlled by the remote control. See "Controllable TV brands" on page 17 in the manual.
2. Turn on the TV.
3. While you press and hold TV POWER on the remote control, press CH ^ or CH v one or more times until the TV turns off. Each time you press one of these buttons, the remote control sends a manufacturer code (between 1 and 45) to the TV.

Found out the TV is to old for the remote to be compatable with the converter box remote. Thank you

I have had my converter box 5 days now. I hooked it up to the TV and set it up. No Problem. Except there are no instructions on how to set up the VCR/DVD player with it, which we use more than we do watching TV. Everything worked fine until on the second day we had it I read I could program the remote to turn the TV on and off. I followed the instructions and the TV went off. When I turned it back on, my remote went berserk. If I try to change a channel it will quickly flip through all the channels until I turn the converter box off. Same with the volume, it goes up and down, up and down until I shut off the box. The remote does not work unless you are about 1 foot away from the box. And the remote has never turned the TV on or off except that first time I programed it.
