A laptop take out the big battery pack first.
Does it stay on? does the fan blow while one.
is there text ever ?
do the BIOS keys work?
cool real beeps presented.
dit dit , dah = code U (morse) or the reverse? dah, dit dit
is the CMOS coin cell battery 12 years old? oops, fail.
step one is age what year it is , the beeps match years,
zd8000 is RETIRED, zero support, books or drivers./
XP is bad news,
this thing is super old. with relic Pentium 4 (wow a dog that is.)
old notebook.
take out the big battery first, they short.
step to unplug all cables but that AC pack cable.
2005 is not too old, but 10 years old HP cuts the cord.
XP ran to 2008 , so PC 2009 or newer are best to own with W7
but lets learn the beep codes
power on , hammer f10 key (BIOS pages)
if you see nothing (battery out) that means it lost power
or there is short in the main board , or the CCFL lamps black lamps are deed, use a flashlight on screen see data now
YES then the black lamps burned out. as all do this old.
same test as above try and external screen on the VGA jack
works now?
yes, good, your internal screen is bad
no , the power is lost to to the main board.
i use a voltmeter at the jack on main board, 19vdc is it.
10v bad powerpack.
if the pack is ok we strip all modules off the main board to find who is shorted,
the beep codes are very poorly documented,(changed often)
and not same on desktop as lap top.
common codes are
bad ram (try 1 stick at a time mine has 4 so 1 by 1 in bank0 test.
bad VGA GPU chip or its shared dram above is dead
bad CMOS COIN cell, causing , corrupted cmos errors.
and more, some BIOS have 3 or 4 errors others have 25 or more.
Award BIOS is very complex. if that is what you have.
bad battery pack (main power is weak)
Bad power pack,its weak.
CPU bad, (rare as hens teeth if it did fall out)
CPU overheating.
The service guide skips this on this laptop.
some hp docs are there, but not indexed, i do site search to get old books. ask.

The beep patterns always tell you what the problem is, but it depends on what kind of BIOS is in your computer. You can take a look here, maybe you find what is the problem with your machine: http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml
