Cable I have a yard machines walk behind mower with a tecumseh engine that is only a year old. The cable that goes from the handle down to the engine won't pull the lever enough to allow the engine to start. Is there any way to adjust either the cable or the lever?

I'll tell you what I did to a cable like that on an old mower of mine, if you promise not to laugh at an old ****. I cut my cable shorter and fashioned a little bushing out of some small weedeater fuel line, so the edge of the hole on the lever wouldn't wear on the cable, and crimped a small cable clamp in the position I wanted and was back in action. Hope this helped, don't laugh, and best wishes.

In all seriousness, I did do that. But, what is the problem with your cable, does it seem too long? Look where the the cable is secured on the mower with the clamp, loosen it, and adjust the cable casing where you want it to put adequate pull on the lever and tighten down. Hope this helps and best wishes.

If the V-belt is old, you'll need to install a new V-belt first ,then IIRC,the adjustment is by sliding the bale conduit on the side of the handle.

Speed of the lawn mower governor is missadjusted

The engine revs are turned down to make the machine noise compliant, increasing the revs will greatly increase the noise, the engine revs shouold not realy be increased, however a dealer with a suitable engine taco may do it for you, it is very important not too over speed the engine or it will self destruct,

I have MTD Yard machine and don't know if it is 2 or 4 cycle. Oil should be-SAE30. Can I use oil for 4-cycle which they soid me i Can. Tire.(M otomaster)

If your mower has seperate fill caps for the oil and the gasoline, then you have a 4 cycle or 4 stroke engine. In this case use SAE HD30 motor oil. If there is only 1 fill cap and it says oil & fuel mix, then you have a 2 cycle or 2 stroke engine.
Good luck

What is the cable on a yard machine walk behind that stops the motor when you releace it called.

The dead man cable or "deadman bar".
It kills the power to the magneto and stalls/shuts down the engine.

There does not seem to be a spark. I even put fuel

is the deadmans handle pulling the cable enough to cancel the off switch? if not relase the cable from the handle, TIE A KNOT IN IT(!), re fit to handle, & bingo!
If the cable is working well enough already DONT tie a knot, it wont help, its the ignition coil! ( around £30)

Suddenly stopped then could not pull mower backwards because rear wheels would only go forwards, and mower would no longer start

Sounds like your mower has a safety mechanism that has locked up. On your push handle is a bar that must be pulled back in order to pull start cord, it has a cable that goes to the safety brake, check the cable to the safety brake on the flywheel, it may be broke. If it isn't in the safety brake itself, try spraying the cable with WD-40 as this may free it up. Or the cable may need replacing from wear. To check this pull back on the handle and watch the on the side of the engine where this cable attaches, if it is moving on the side of the engine then this cable won't be the problem. In this case it most likely will be the safety brake itself that's the problem. Do not remove the safety brake if under warranty as this will void your warranty.
