It does not have a pull cord. We do not have a test light (yet). Thanks for all the advice, it's dark out so I guess he'll call it a night.

Sounds like it is locked up. Could be rust in cyl. or liquid lock from gas, remove the spark pulg and see if it will turn. Try to turn by hand or use a wrinch on the main nut on top. If you suspect rust, remove the spark plug and spray wd 40 in there for a day, try to turn with wrinch back and forth. till you free it up. it may burn a little oil but she should still run. You will need to clean the carb it will be gummed up, no doubt with rust or old gas (old gas turns to varnish in about 3-4 months). if it has sat outside it will rust the cylinder thru the muffler thru the exhaust valve if open,  moisture finds away.

You have a starter soleniod that bolts to the wall, put an old screw driver across the two large terms see if it will turn then. If it does you have a bad switch . your wiring from your key switch goes thru a switch on your brake under the frame then thru a switch under the seat. ck the wire by pass all the switches. use a wire stright from your battery and touch the pos. term on the soleniod. if it turns then now you know one of the switches is bad. try that. get back to me.

Does the engine spin by hand freely? you need to see if you can put a pipe wrench or channel lock pliers on the shaft of the motor and see if it will spin over freely.

Does it turn over with the starter but not start?

  • outdoorsman5
    outdoorsman5 Jul 28, 2009

It sounds like you are not even getting power to turn the starter over. Does it have a pull rope besides the starter? Have you pulled the starter off or seen if you have power to the starter with a test light? I know you put a new battery in but have you checked to make sure the battery is fully charged and nothing is wrong with the battery?

That is fine. check to make sure you have plenty of power to the starter or try using jumper cables from your car to the lawn mower making sure you hook them up right. There is no reason why the engine will not turn over unless you have a electrical problem that you are not getting power to the starter or there is something wrong either with the starter or the battery.

MTD model number 13RL771H029. I purchased it in 2008 with 46" deck. Are all 3 spindles the same part number

I have an operator's manual for an MTD Model Series 760-770 Lawn Tractor. This Manual seems to indicate two different part numbers for the spindles on a 46" deck. One spindle is a Double Pulley, part number 618-04134B. The other two spindles are single pulley, part number 618-0240A.

However 760-770 is a series number. So this does not necessarily match your machine. The first question is what year is your Lawn Tractor? Following is a discussion of MTD serial numbers from 1997 till now. Pre 1997 is a different discussion.

The second question is what is your actual Model Number?

Locating Your Model and Serial Numbers

The model and serial numbers are essential to find correct MTD® genuine factory replacement part numbers for your outdoor power equipment. Once you know these numbers, you can use either the illustrated parts look-up tool or the operator's manual download to easily search for the correct part numbers needed.

What should my model and serial number look like?

MTD's current (1997 and later) model and serial numbers are generally 11 characters in length. A character could be a number, dash or a letter. If 0 represented all numbers and/or dashes and X represented all letters, the model and serial numbers should appear as follows: 00XX000X000.

These are made of both letters and numbers, and typically look like this: 11AA111A111.

I have a MTD ride-on about 3 years old which has an electrical problem. When trying to start the mower the engine doesn't crank. I can hear a "clicking" noise from below the seat. I would have thought this...

If you know that the battery is good, then it is the Magneto, (This is the part responsible for recharging your battery as you use the mower.)
However, your battery may be bad and no longer receiving a charge. Take it to a local auto parts store and they can test it for free.

Good Luck!

12.5 hp mtd starter turns slowlllllly

brush's inside the starter are bad the brush's made poor contact with the armature inside the startermotor and are not getting full contact causing the armture to get hot causing the starter not to spin at rated speed to start motor you have 2 things you can do (1) take the motor off the lawn mower unit and have it rebuilt or buy a new unit and still have the old one rebuilt so you have a spair have them test it in front of you take and place it in a dry plastic bag so you have it ready for the next time it fails

Have MTd 42'riding lawnmower. It was running well, I turned it off the machine, took break and now it just clicks at the solenoid. I have replaced solenoid, battery, and now it still clicks. What do you...

Try jumping directly to the starter. If it still won't turn, try placing your hands flat on the screen and turn it back and forth sharply to try to dislodge the starter gear from the flywheel. They can, on rare occasion, get wedged in the flywheel and not turn. If none of the above work, I'd remove the starter and bench test it.

Ride on mower mtd will not start

Use a jumper cable from the battery to the post on the starter where the wire from the solonoid connects, if it spools up normal its the cable to the starter motor, if it continues to turn slow remove the starter and clean up the places where the starter and engine case contact each other (to ensure a good ground). If none of these solutions correct the issue the starter could be dragging and need to be replaced.
