Sounds nuts, but slap it softly a couple times in the palm of your hand. what ever is jarring the gears for the lens inside gets freed up. it worked for mine - i was soooo happy!! if the above doesnt work, try this.

Pushing the Power button and the OK button for a few seconds at the same time worked for me! Thank you "jildo" I was worried about my camera, but you're suggestion was a quick fix!

I have the same problem with the same camera, except i think theres more wrong with my lense than it just being jammed. BUT, i did get the lense to come all the way out by holding down the shutter button and the power button to turn it on. if that doesn't work i also read you can try pressing the center OK button while pressing the power button to turn it on

Remove the battery, let it sit for at least 2 hours, then put it back. if the error still occurs and the lens is not retracting, consult the warranty for the device as the lens assembly gears may be at fault.

It worked for me by giving a few soft slaps as gray taylor said! The lens made a crack and went totally out and it is now working!

I have a Canon PowerShot SD780 IS. And my lens is out of the camera and will not turn on. It's been about 3 weeks and I don't know what to do. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

When I switch the camera on,the lens rapidly unfolds out then rolls back in again, on the screen it says there is a lens error, this happens repeatedly rendering the camera useless, Is it...

The problem is with the lens assembly itself. The lens assembly sits within the body of the camera and can be replaced on its own without the need to replace the entire camera. While lens assembly repairs vary they usually range between 60 and 110 dollars. Consult your warranty to see if you are still covered by the manufacturer or the retailer as your repair would be free. Standard Canon warranties are 1 year from the date of purchase.

Canon powershot SD780 is camera. Camera shows the canon screen then turns black and beeps three times then says "lens error restart camera". I don't know how to restart...i need to use it I'm on a trip...

There's really no way to restart it if there's a physical problem with the lens. Try to power it on again but if that doesn't reset it, the camera needs to be serviced. A great site for help with these is: camerasandparts.com They just specialize in service for the Canon Powershots and nothing else, they are fantastic if you need help with one of these problems. Try them, your exact SD780 lens error restart camera problem is right on the site for the SD780. Good luck, that's the place for help with a powershot, it just sucks that it happened while you are on vacation.

Lens error, reset camera, how do i fix?

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
