- Thank you very much for your time in helping solve my problem. After reading from other forums, I already disabled the "low ink level" warning using the same method you posted pressing the stop/reset button, however I realized the ink level monitor was useful as it would remind me when to refill the cartridges. What I was wanting to know was how to REALLY reset the ink counter without having to change the chips and/or cartridges. I guess it would be impossible to do it. Or maybe some people would come up with the chip resetter for Canon like the one people use with Epson? Also, refilling the color ink made my print outs wierd. I'm not sure what happened but I think the colors mixed in the cartridge that I got green instead of yellow, purple instead of red. I got no problem with the blue and black, though. I opened the tank and cleaned the sponges, nozzles, and head thoroughly, but the same problem persist. I ended up buying a new expensive color cartridge! Can you guys give me tips on how to refill the color tank without having to mix up the colors? Please? Cheeeeeeeers! :-)

pay in the near ink shop they will refill your ink
If you hold the resume/stop button on the printer for 10 seconds when you go to print it shouldn't give you anymore messages about that cartridge. This printer never forgets a cartridge and you may have to do it for each one you buy, unless you always refill the same one.
For a PC you can disable the status monitor of the ink by going into control panel, printers & faxes then right clicking on your printer. click properties. pick the maintenance tab then "view printer status" button. click option the click enable status monitor .. then click OK. If you do this your printer will never tell you if ink is low anymore.
hope this helps everybody. I know I was frustrated about it!!
From what I've been able to find out about it you need to buy some kind of smart chip and install it in the cartridge after refilling it. I just let the lights flash.
Man! I have had this problem forever now and I jst solved it.
I kept thinking there has GOT TO BE A WAY!
well there is. I ahve not figured out a way to do it for free but I did find a cool little machiene that you can use to clear these chips and reset it so it works just like a new ink cart again.
Some of the sellers are getting over 50 bucks for these though. a blue one costs about 58.00 a red one is about half that. both do the same thing and it takes about 5 seconds per ink cart. use it for years on the batteries it comes with. or you can buy one that plugs in the wall for 80.00
go to eBay and type in the search Cannon chip resetter you will see them there.
i was thinking about getting a wall unit then charging everyone I know for this service. LOL it would pay for it's self fairly quick i would think. say like 8 or 10 bucks for all 4 - then they buy a boat load of the cheap ink with no chips and I do that for 8 people and poof I getthe machiene free.
In July 2008 a new hack willbe here i have read, where you dont putthe chip in the cart anymore, it goes on a plastic strip and inserts in the macheine - then you dont have to worry about it. sounds cool to me.
I have teh MP510 this resetter works for any printer that uses these carts.
I have exactly the same problem and want to know how you disable the ink level monitor for canon ix4000...without refilling the cartridges! is it possible? helllp

My MP160 printer was displaying low ink sign and messages. I put new cartridges, not from Canon, but from others. It prints ok, but low ink sign is still thee. Why? I cannot find anywhere to "install new ink".
I have changed both of the cartridges but when implementing a print request am informed that ink is low. All the maintenance checks have been performed with positive results
