I want to replace the leak cistern - Home

Funny system. You usually have a large access panel of access from a tank room behind. Removal would be opposite of installation.

if it has a single button , undo the metal ring around the button and lift the top off

The flush control panel normally comes off. You can then hopefully see inside. You won't be able to see much though as the cistern will be in the way...

Places to look for leaks are:
Soil pipe to pan
Cistern to flush pipe
Flush pipe to pan
Cistern overflow.

I assume you have a modern compact cistern that probably has an economy flush facility?

I have very little experience of these. There are two possibilities - firstly the water level could be too high due to a leaking inlet valve and the water leaking into the bowl is from the internal overflow.

A friend has recently had one of these fitted to economise on water but it soon developed a constant leak into the lavatory pan. I checked the water level which was ok and then she called out the guys that fitted it - twice! The first guy took it apart and could find nothing wrong so put it back again and when the leak had stopped went away. The next day the leak was worse and so another guy arrived and did the same but in an effort to justify his existence replaced one small fibre washer and one small O ring even though they appeared to be ok.

The leak stopped and to date has remained stopped. Clearly that type of cistern needs to be assembled very carefully with the sort of precision not typical of plumbers or plumbing.

You will need to replace the seal under the flush valve, need to dismantle cistern mechanism.

Fixing a leaky toilet is actually rather simple, requiring few tools and just a little time and effort. In looking at Caroma toilets on Google, they appear to be just a standard type of unit, and should present few if any problems for yourself or any handyman of modest skill.

If the water is leaking from between the tank (cistern) and the toilet bowl, the job is even easier, as it does not require lifting and moving the entire toilet. I am sorry to hear your Plumber insisted you buy an entire new toilet, but do remember he is in the business of making money!

The flush unit has washers in the cistern that must be changed when the leak starts. you can do it yourself as the cistern must be checked to remove the float and the rubber seal must be taken out to be replaced by the same type / size.

Assuming the seal washer is inside the cistern and there are no cracks in the cistern itself you could apply a silicon sealant to the seal washer inside the cistern.

It may be that the washers are worn out, or you might have the nut too tight.
