I press the on button and nothing happens for a few seconds and then it appears to begin powering up - fan starts, lights come on - but only for a few seconds then it shuts off. There is no beep.
After several times repeating the process it will generally just start up as if there was nothing wrong at all. I have tried switching from battery to a/c but have found no difference.
Sounds to me as though the unit is forcing itself in to shutdown. Could be related to an overheating issue or an actual hardware failure, but if the unit is fine after a few attempts, I suspect airflow issues in the fan. Check to see if the air port are blocked, and if you have some compressed air, clean it out.

I even put my computer outside the door in a cool place and the power went off. I noticed that it happened to me after upgrading the memory. I am wondering if that's the actual problem. I'll try again today after I take the new memory module out of the laptop to see if I can reproduce the issue.
Cheers,
Syed

Try reseating memory modules first, could be some kind of connection issue between the memory module and the motherboard. If you have two memory modules installed, remove them one by one and test the laptop with each memory module in each memory slot separately. If you still experience the same problem after swapping/reseating RAM, probably it's not memory issue. Try starting the laptop without the hard drive installed and see if the laptop works fine without the hard drive. This problem could be related to a faulty hard drive. If swapping reseating RAM and removing the HDD doesn't help, apparently you have a problem with the motherboard. I doubt that this issue is related to overheating or bad fan. Usually Toshiba laptops will work for a while even with a bad or missing fan.
