Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Side by side, maytag manufactured late 1997 The history, symptoms, and why I am doing this follow the 3 questions I need answered. Questions will be as follows: 1. What could cause the defrost heater to fail repeatedly! Constantly? 2. Is it possible that the tech may be taking away the defrost heater, when it could be repaired, instead? Or a different option that replacement? 3. Will you please send me a repair manual of my fridge or a compatible? Defrost system breaks down. Tech replaces defrost heater every 14 months or so. With food loss I'm shocked that I've spent well over 2x what I paid for the fridge, 11 years later. I'm trying to get Maytag (now Whirlpool) to bear the expense of fixing the source of the problem. I have no repair manual. I can only piece together similar models and do "best guess". I've poured 40 hours I don't have into researching the guts of this machine, and am tempted to think that the thermostat, or whatever timer system it uses is the cause. I'm an artist by trade, (starving) and I'm finally at my wits end. (Symptoms, the usual. food loss, then icing up of lower panel back of freezer.) Could you send me a repair manual to either this model or a compatible? I've found from a parts website that the defrost heater is used not only by my RSD2050AGE but also Maytag RSB2000DAE Amana RSBG659P Maytag RSW22E0DAE (This is a model made in USA but exported to Australia -- where it's tortured me ever since.) Thanks, Angeli

Angeli, First I need to ask you a few questions about your voltage there in Australia. The replacement defrost heater elements here are made for 120 volts AC. I believe your voltage there is 240 volts ac. That will burn out the elements fast. If the elements are not rated for your local voltage they will burn out. Here is a link to Maytag USA you may need to make a few calls to see if Maytag will help you there in the UK. http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/html/index.html
If you need any help or have more questions feel free to let me know, Thanks Sea Breeze
