Try a different disk in the unit and see if it does the same thing. If it still just makeing noise without any thing playing then you have a bad laser/pickup and it will require replacement.

The lens in the DVD drive maybe dirty, gently clean the lens with a soft cloth.
If this does not fix the problem then the drive maybe faulty and needs to be replaced.

Hi, ive got an Acer Aspire. When i put a disk into the drive it makes this werid sound, not a beeping but just err err err. and nothing happens to the disk. Nothing wiill start when and after i insert the...

This indicates that you media (CD/DVD) cannot be read/is not recognised by your notebook drive: to make sure that you have a working drive, try inserting a know good CD/DVD. If this works, then you may have a compatibilty issue either because of the media used (eg. brand especially with Rewitable device) or the format of the data on your media (is your drive capable or reading both CD and DVD). You can assess the compatibility issue by using another computer/notebook to try to read your media.
Hope it helps: let me know how you go and good luck!

My disk drive is not working i am trying to down load a new program and when i put the disk in it will read it and then error appears

Hi saratrought, if Windows XP runs and you have read problems in CD/DVD drive try to read another disk, if any other disk work fine then you need to copy your CD/DVD info (or program) in another new disk.

Or just use Windows Explorer to try copy all data from CD/DVD disk to a New Folder in your Hard Drive and then from that location you can try to install your program, if your data don´t copy well then again i tell you that it´s your disk not your CD/DVD drive.

Sorry by bad english.

My cd/dvd (sh-s182d )rom read cd only but it wont response

CD/DVD ROM drives like yours employs two lasers to work properly, one for CD read function and the other for DVD read function.

It seems that your laser for DVD reading is either dirty or damaged.

Try an optical drive cleaner, if that does not fix it, you are going to have to replace the drive. If you have warranty then replace it or have it fixed. However, if your warranty has expired then the best thing to do is to buy a new one. They are not expensive these days so the price difference between fixing it and buying new should not be huge.

A lens cleaner disk should be available from most computer shops.

I assume you have proper software for DVD video playback like PowerDVD, VLC media player etc.

Data disk read as blank disk

This may be a reading media incompatibility problem. This does happen with some DVD/CD players. This usually mentioned in the owners manual of the product. You can try looking under the instructions for the operation of the DVD/CD player in the manual. If you cannot find the information there, you can try using the internet search engines for the make and model number of your notebook and the type of DVD/CD discs you are using. Use the search engine for known problems with the use of the media with your type of notebook DVD/CD player. You can also call Lenovo customer support telephone number 1-877-453-6686. Give them the model number of the notebook and ask them for assistance with the problem. Thank you for using FixYa and have a nice day!

CD DVD drive won't read application disks like Photoshop, Vegas

Either they put in a bad mother board or damaged yor DVD drive. Maybe they even put in the wrong unit. In any case I'd send it back to them.

NAD T532 probem

CD and DVD disks use a different set of optics for each type of operation. Some units have a different laser for the different format types.

The fault could be mechanical alignment, calibration, or a failure in the signal and or processor path. These types of faults are impossible to guess at.

If the unit is under warranty, contact the dealer to find out how to get it serviced. If out of warranty it may not be feasible to service.

When trying to play dvd wont due to saying either unknown disc or defective disc

As i don't know the model of your dvd player or the type of dvd you are using I can only give you a very basic response for possible issues.  1. you are using a "burned" dvd on an older dvd player. Some older dvd players can't read dvd's burned from a computer. 2. The lense is dirty, scratched or damaged.. if other disks work in the dvd player, than this option is out the window. 3. DVD is damaged or defective. Just like the previous solution, if the disk works in other dvd players, this option is out the window 4. The DVD is from a different Region. Here in Canada and the US we are region 1, if you get a disk from Europe or japan. they are region 2 dvd's and thus don't work in our north american machines. 5. Some older DVD players have difficulty reading dual layer discs - just a though
I hope those were helpful, if not message me back with the dvd player model number and the movie or type of disk you were using.

Sharp BD-HP20U Had been working fine, until today tried number of disk both blu-ray and dvd in and during disk reading process an error msg comes up incompatible disk

I have the same problem. I started several months ago with brand new blueray disks. Now even disks that worked before, now come up as incompatible disks. I have tried contacting support thru their website and never getting a response. Not even the automated response about how blueray is always changing. No firmware upgrades since 10-29-08. I will never purchase any sharp products again. And I would advise anyone considering it, dont. What a waste of money.
