Remove the air cleaner and spray some starting fluid into the carb. If it starts then ok if not then remove the spark plug and check for spark.

WILL NOT TURN OVER OIL FILL A PULL START

Sounds like you may have oil in the cylinder. This is caused by engine tipping over or maybe the generator fell over on its side, etc. This ends up making it really hard to pull start the engine.

Anyway, try removing the spark plug (make sure the ignition wire is pulled out of the way) and then turn over the engine a few times (5 or 6 times) to get any oil out.

Then replace the spark plug and try again to see if it starts.

What's the best choke setting for starting a cold generator

Full choke to start, open choke partially immediately the engine starts to where the motor runs smoothly, continue opening as soon as you can while keeping the engine running smoothly. Be sure to open fully before leaving the unit, running it with the choke partially on can cause a rich fuel condition which tends to wash the oil off the cylinder walls and it also dilutes the oil with gasoline.

when you added fuel to the old fuel in the tank, i advice you to take all the fuel out, clean the carb, blow out fuelrestrictors in it and fill up with new fuel and try again. also check the sparkplug, and check if it sparks. good luck.

Can't start coleman powermate 500 generator

I had one of these and it was very sensitive about getting the carb jet plugged up from leaving gasoline in the tank and carb bowl. I had to take it apart and clean it w/ card claener several times. I can tell you the engine is super sensitive ab out the needle jet setting. Too rich or too lean and it won't run at all or will gas you out from the smoke.

Oil for Coleman Powermate 5000 PM0545305.03

Yes, SAE5W30 is just the right oil for this machine,it will take about a quart to fill it up to the bottom of the threads in the oil fill hole.
The engine of this generator is essentially just like a lawn mower with a fixed throttle setting. You should expect all of the same issues as any small engine that's been sitting for a while. Check the fuel tank for water/debris, check the carb for fouling, check the spark plug, etc.

If the generator has been sitting for 3+ years without running you may need to flash it to get any voltage out of it. If you get the engine running and it won't make any electricity ask me directly and I'll talk you thru the procedure.

I looked on www.powermate.com for an owners manual but they only seem to have the parts list, rats.

Regards,
Carl
