Upgrading my Acer Aspire M1641 Desktop graphics card

Hey i am looking to upgrade my systems graphics card to be able to play more Graphic demanding games.

At the momeny i currently have a rubbish ATI Radeon HD 3450 at a mere 256MB which to me is usless lol.

I am not sure about my current motherboard or either if it is compatible with the better graphics cards like i found a pretty good one but i don't want to go frying my motherboard or whatever

Can anyone give me some info on the right graphics card, power supply, motherboards, drivers and any other components i need to take in

BTW as you might know im not 100% savvy with PC's so i need some detailed advice thanks

Thank you very much this helped me alot, i have done the PS calculator and my current power output is 350w, so say if i bought a new VGA card and for etc. it was a 50w card does that mean i could just add a extra 50w to my supply?

    Im fine for system memory and HD's i have a Intel Core 2 Duo processor @ 2.60 GHz, 3GB RAM and i have 2 320 GB HD's.

Thanks again for the advice i think i would've ended up buying a really powerfull card and end up blowing my system up without help haha.

It really comes down to $$$ Money $$$. Your motherboard will support most of the newer graphics cards, but many of them have higher power supply requirements than what is standard in you desktop. What do you have in mind as in dollars?

The motherboard will support any PCI Express x16 or PCI Express 2.0 x16 video cards. Your main concern should be with the power supply since it is either a 300w or 250w.

Here is a pretty good choice for your price range:

Input your info here to see if you need a power supply upgrade.

A little money for system memory would be good if you have less than 1 Gig.
You can test it here:

If you are saving money by not buying a motherboard and want to spend it (which is what I would do), I would put the money into a the video card and power supply.
Like this:

And this:

I do not know the dimensions of the Aspire Case, so one thing to keep in mind is the dimensions of the card and the power supply. Make sure they will fit before buying.

If you start replacing motherboards and such, you might as well just go with a whole new system. A new motherboard, new CPU, new memory, new graphics, new power supply, fast hard drives, new case.

Thermaltake & FSP maked a VGA power supply that you could add to you system. This is the easiest and most straight forward solution for someone not familiar with the inside of a computer. It is guaranteed compatible if you have an open front bay where a CD/DVD would go.

But you could replace the 250w with a 500w to 700w power supply. When replacing a power supply, you must make sure the one you are replacing is a compatible. Your 250w is probably a standard ATX, but you will need to compare the plugs that attach to the motherboard to make sure the color coded wires are in the same place. Not hard, but important.

Have you ever replaced anything on the inside of a computer?

Hi i need to upgrade my old pc . i whant to buy a graphic card to play all the new games 2011 but i dont know what g card to buy. my motherboard it is :Mainboard >>> > Manufacturer :...

if you have a old PC then upgrading the graphics card alone will not get your computer up to date to play 2011 games, you might need to buy a whole new 2011 computer. Go online and do a system requirement test of the game you are willing to download or buy and play.

I cont play 3d games graphic card is there in acer aspire 4720z

* The system configuration of Acer Aspire 4720Z PC Notebook is :

160 GB or larger hard disk drive / 5-in-1 card reader / 512 MB or 1GB DDR2 533 MHz DIMM module / Intel Pentium dual-core mobile processor technology T2310 (1 MB L2 cache, 1.46, 533 MHz FSB), Mobile Intel GL960 Express Graphics Chipset.

* Your system have "Mobile Intel GL960 Express Graphics Chipset" graphics accelerator card embedded in the motherboard. Like most of the laptops/notebooks, there is no room for upgrading the graphics card in the motherboard!

* But you can upgrade the RAM upto 2 GB using two DDR2 DIMM memory modules.

* If you want to play 3D games with better performance, switch to Windows XP SP2 and upgrade the RAM!

* If you want to upgrade the memory (RAM), you can check this site :

Wel, I am searching for moore info abut this specif motherboard and how much I can upgrade it. Many thans if you could give me a webbpage to reveal the info..

Upgrading a motherboard is not generally feasible. This system uses a shared memory graphics chip. A better solution would be to install a new graphics card. That and more memory would give you a better performing system, BUT
This system also has just a 250 watt power supply which is going to serious limit your upgrade capability. Most video cards take 400-500 watts so you are also looking at upgrading the power supply.
You would be better off just buying a better system or building your own. NewEgg has an $800 build your own that looks awesome.
Here are details on your system:

Aspire M1641 - can't play games (super slow)

There could be several reasons that is so:
  1. The PC may not meet the minimum requirements for the game. These include screen resolution, graphics card, memory, sound capability.
  2. The graphics card may not meet the requirements of the game - memory, graphics rendering capability etc.
  3. The operating system may not meet the requirements of the game eg ActiveX, DirectX etc. All these are related with graphics/display capability.
Please check the MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for the game and make sure your PC meets these.
All the best!

Upgrade needed?

Well, i took a look whaats on your Acer, you definetly need to upgrade your graphic card, and u need a lot more memory.
The graphic card u need is an APG 8X card, make sure that the new graphic card is a fast one coz your processor is a sempon, its like an intel celeron, not realy made for games.
The momory you have is 512mb, you have 2 slots and you can max have 2gb, i sugest you buy 2x1gb sticks, the memorytype is 184 Pin DIMMs 400MHz.

Here is the details for your pc:

Good luck
