Question about DeLonghi EC701 Espresso Machine

No water ever makes it through the pump

I've had my rancilio for five years. It's been great. Now the machine makes an awful noise when turned on and no water ever makes it through the pump, thus no espresso!!!!!! I have changed the pump but no water still comes through the pump however. What's the problem and how do I fix it?

Espressione Retro has worked beautifully for a year, but now after sitting unused for 2 months while I was away from home, very little water will come through the head when I attempt to make coffee. Tried the steam wand (to perhaps prime the pump and determine whether or not it draws water) and that seems to work as normal,. The Machine just doesn't get very much pressure of volume of water through the head. Also can't see how to remove the shower head to clean and check for clogs at that end of the system. Help?

Re: No water ever makes it through the pump

I just got mine working again. There was scale in the outlet port for the coffee basket.
Try cleaning by running through a solution of CLR and water (1 to 4 parts) and keep running until the blockage dissolves and flow is restored. Then run another solution again just to clean it for good.

MAKE SURE TO RINSE OUT THE RESERVIOUR VERY WELL. Should run clear without foam after about a gallon of clean water.

You have to prime the pump.. Hit the water button and open the steam knob.

If no water goes through the steam wand I would check for a clogged water line.

SOURCE: Espressione Retro Clogged?

I had the same problem with mine. unfortunatly you will need a special tool to remove the diffuser head. It' a very small spanner wrench that turns the special screw. I was able to make a spanner out of a screwdriver, but I'm a toolmaker by trade. Your best bet is to have it done by a qualified repair service. Also, if you damage the screw, it's imposible to get parts from them.

Loud drilling noise when coffee switch is turned on - rather than the usual purring noise - and no coffee delivery either

How old is your machine ? and what maintenance have you done over time such as replacing the shower curtain located at the pourring end of the hot water ? I had too very loud noise coming occasionnally from the stainless steel rack holding the cup while coffee is delivered. If your ground coffee is too fine it will stop flow during making a shot. Is water coming out when no coffee is placed in the portafilter. The water pump on this machine is a cheap pump that has to be replaced over time. Mine is 7 years old and has delivered four cups of expresso everyday of the year, and still working.3841c994-fb4b-459f-8d1f-710e0aafc3c0.jpg 2ead4f70-37c6-4236-a9c2-992dba149c4c.jpg

I just got a new Rancilio Silvia, it's making a loud knocking noise. Is this common if not what should I do?

The pump is a vibratory pump on rubber mounts. It makes a loud buzz when running.

The pump makes a knocking sound when it is out of place on the mounts and banging into something and when the pressure is high (water flow is blocked)

Open the wand all the way (no back pressure) and make some hot water. If the noise changes to a quiet hum, get a warranty repair. If the noise changes some but is still a knock, take out the water reservoir and the pump shield.

You can see the shield by looking down into the cavity left by the reservoir. One screw hold the shield in place. Remove the screw and the shield, and wiggle the pump around in its mounts until it does not bump into anything when running. Then replace the shield, screw and reservoir.

Rancillio Expresso Machine won't pump water through. Makes lound noise.

Hi There are a couple of things. 1. Your pump is not primed. Open the steam knob and push the middle switch. 2. Your intake hose is pinched or not connected to the pump, or your intake hose is not in the water tank.

Rancilio producing very very slow shots...even when no portafilter.

from your description i can conclude only 2 things:
  1. coffe grinded too fine
  2. pump pressure low
i think you can chek these 2 and have your perfect espresso again

No water coming through the pump

Ok, We got a solution. We have hard water from a well. We disassembled the 3-way valve and removed the brass valve receiver. The outlet going to the coffee was plugged up solid with gunk (technical term). I used a tiny piece of wire from a wire tie and cleaned out the gunk, then soaked all the brass parts in descaler. The whole effort only took about half an hour. We used a crescent wrench, phillips screwdriver, and a 3mm allen wrench. We found the directions for the process at I think that descaling loosened a bunch of gunk from the tank and it got jammed in the tiiny hole.
