There is a round button just above the F4 key on the keyboard which turns it on or off, the one to the left of the power button.

Look for an aerial symbol or something like i))), these will be above the usual key symbol on your keyboard in a different colour, you will have to use the shift or function key to activate it, some laptops have an actual switch, usually a slider, have a good look around your laptop to find it, also there should be a light that comes on once activated.
Once you activate it you will need your WEP/ WPA key and your SSID (router name) (providing your network is secure), otherwise if not secured the router name will appear in your available networks and you will be able to connect.
good luck!!

My son took out the dvd drive on my compaq presario s4010cl and i think he rehooked up the internal card wires wrong for the internet. It shows that i am connected but i can't actual get into the...

This is the schematic for the board in your HP machine

This is a very old board, there should be no wires to the motherboard for the LAN or wireless, as the LAN connection is built into the rear of the board, any wireless connection will be via a PCI card, which plugs directly into one PCI slot.

I think therefore that the inability to get onto the internet is not the fault of your son, but a problem with the router security. Try disabling windows firewall temporarily and see if that helps, if not, please repost and describe the problem in more detail, including the model and make of your router

Can not enable wireless

Usually if there is a problem with the hardware it shows up wth a differant error. Usually disabled means it is switched off or you have the cable plugged in.

On a laptop we have the often annoying option of switching the wireless off to save the battery. On your model the off/on switch or button is located just above the keyboard. There should be three buttons near the bottom of the screen. The left most button is the one we want. Just push it and your wifi should start if this is how it was turned off.

If it doesn't then we may need to check the network connections window. moz-screenshot.png moz-screenshot-1.pngHere we can make sure it is enabled. Unplug the cable connection if its plugged in. Some drivers will auto switch to the faster speed ie the cable while others go to the wireless. Unplugging it forces it to try the wireless.

Click on start then look for something called network connection along the right side. If it is there then click on it and it will bring up a window called network connections. You may have to go to settings then control panel and network connections which is the other way of getting here.

This should show 3 things. A cable connection ie something like Broadcom 10/100, your wireless connection called something like Athero's and usually something called 1394 which is Firewire. Right click on the wireless one and if it says ENABLE click that and your wireless should startup.

Limited or No Conectivity.

you might have two problems here (router and computer). test first your router if other computer can connect to it without experiencing similar issues. if other computer computers can connect to the router then there is no problem with your router.main problem would be your laptop. the mini troubleshooting will right actually but its very tedious if you will be doing that everyday. what you will do there is to reinstall your wireless adapter driver. usually driver cd is included in the system when you purchased it. if same thing happened after driver installation then there should be a problem in your wireless network card. you can test it by going to command prompt and type in ipconfig once you saw this Limited or no connectivity error. An invalid address of the form 169.254.x.x signifies your computer's inability to obtain a usable IP address from your router.

Unable to connect the internet with wireless!

delete wireless connections and reboot, insure you do not have the wired ehternet cable also installed, and insure that wireless switch is off as well for now. when system reboots, turn on the wireless switch and see if the program for IP is corrected.
