I plugged in the tv yesterday and it was working fine. This morning I went to watch some tv an all I got was sound. Nothing comes on the screen at all... not even a flicker or lines. Is it a hopeless cause?

What TV model is it? You should begin by unpluging the TV from the mains and have the TV unpluged for at least 3 minutes, if that does not work then you need to factory reset the TV, but note that you will loose all of your previous settings on the TV. I hope this solve your problem.
1) When the picture "stops", does the standby light blink at all?
2) Can you post the model number please?
Some of these sets are known to have problems with the picture tube as it starts to age. There are some workarounds for this that can extend the life of the set for a short time. Without the model number though, I can't confirm that this set is in that catagory. Please supply responses to the issues above and we'll continue from there.
It worked fine yesterday. Sound on all channels. Sometimes the picture goes black on channel 6. We can get it back by going up one channel, then back to 6.
it is due to cable signal ie weak.
now there is no sound
this is due to sound section
1 loose connect in sound section
3 problem in sound section some part must have failed.
