If the agitator is particularly stubborn, you can loop some rope under one side of the agitator at the bottom and then up over a broom handle. Now loop it again under the other side of the agitator and back up to the broom. Brace one end of the broom handle against the top of the washer and lift up on the other end. Double check that you have removed anything that may be securing the agitator in place. Do not use too much force or you may damage the washer cabinet, agitator or injure yourself.

98702 is not the model # of the machine. you should find the model # either on top of the machine or in the dryer door area around the frame.

you have to remove the cover inside the upper agitator first, then you will see a plastic cover inside the top. it has 2 raised handle type tabs to pull on, then remove the cover and under it you will find a 7/16 bolt to remove and that will allow you to pull the tophalf of the agitator and change the agitate" dogs "

To remove the agitator on most Maytag models, you remove the center post cap or softener dispenser on the agitator and locate the agitator bolt underneath. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction.

Please follow the steps bellow to remove or open the agitator. It would be highly appreciated if you could mention the make or model of the washing machine.
Unscrew the agitator cap.
Pull up on the agitator.
Fill the tub halfway with hot water if it won't come loose. Sometimes the heat helps release it.
Tap on a small block of wood pressed up against the top of the agitator if it still won't release.
Replace the old one with a new agitator of the same model.

Remove the dispenser cap by pulling it straight up. Under the dispenser cap, there may be another cap. If so, remove the center cap exposing the agitator bolt. Using a socket and ratchet remove the agitator bolt and the top half of the agitator can be lifted out as one piece. With the top portion of the agitator removed, grasp the lower agitator by the bottom flanges and pull straight up. The remaining section should lift off the center post. PS When re-installing the agitator DO NOT over tighten the agitator bolt. This can cause damage to the agitator and create slow rotation problems. Just make sure you tighten the bolt snug, and then give it about a 1/4 turn.

It depends on what model Maytag washer you have. If you have an Atlantis or Performa model Maytag you remove the agitator by, first, pulling the agitator cap and softener dispenser off. Locate the bolt on the center post and and loosen. The agitator will pull straight up to remove. If this is a Dependable Care model Maytag, there's a 1/4 inch screw located on the SIDE of the agitator about 3 quarters of the way down. Locate this screw and loosen.
