Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

Ice maker in fridge does not refill with H2O but will work if filled manually. AND, it worked for 2 or 3 days when we unplugged the fridge/freezer for a day or 2.

Thank you for your reply. I don't think it cycles without water in it. I got it to work again by unplugging fridge and blowing a hair dryer on the rubber tubing in icemaker that delivers the water to tray. Perhaps line is freezing. How can this be prevented? I adusted temp in freezer a bit warmer for now. It's still working now for a little over a day.

Couple things to check... it sounds like one of two problems.

1. Does it continue to cylce without any water in it? If it is still cycling, I would look toward the water inlet valve at the back of the unit. I have seen these water valves get "stuck" but become unstuck temporarily when the power is cut off for a while. They are cheap and easy to replace, and if it still doesn't work, some places (like repairclinic.com will let you return the part- even if you used it).

2. The gears and motor inside the icemaker are getting stuck- perhaps because moisture got in and froze, or perhaps the wiring inside the icemaker isn't connecting properly to "call" for water from the inlet valve.

If the water line is freezing up to the icemaker (the spout that fills the icemaker) it is usually caused by an inlet valve problem... namely when the valve is supposed to be closed, it actually is still allowing a drip to trickle through. This drip may not even be noticeable in the ice, because the drips are freezing in the tube.

However, if the hairdryer technique cures the problem for a while, I would leave it alone... but keep in mind the valve at the back.

Also, you might take the icemaker out compeltely... it is probably held in with 2 or 3 screws, and powered by a multi-prong plug. Leave it the sun (or a window) for a day or two to make sure any moisture inside has a chance to dry out. It may have a squarish plastic cover on one end, which is removable- taking it off will help any moisture to get out.

The ice maker is not working. The tube that refills the tray is

Good day,
The reason the fill tube is frozen is because the water valve on the back bottom of the machine is leaking. It is supposed to fill the ice maker after each harvest cycle and then close smartly.
It is leaking a small amount of water when the ice maker has told it to close.
The water valve is none serviceable and must be replaced.
You will have to completely defrost the fill tube. It can be a dicy problem, especially if rushed. Be patient. You can use a hair dryer but sparingly. Too much heat will start to melt things you don't want melted causing some nasty damage to the plastic and vinyl components. Ideally unplugging the machine and leaving the freezer door open overnight is the best way, but that creates problems with food if you have no where to store it.
The option is yours, but as said go slowly.

Ice maker has ice motor doen't dump the ice

Your ice-maker may need to be "hard-reset". To do this, perform a manual-defrost by emptying out the freezer (and fridge) and shutting all power off to your unit for several hours (at least half a day unless you can be sure the temp in the freezer has fully reached ambient. Next, with freezer empty, restore power, make sure the "ice" setting is set to off, then set the forced power-freeze mode (you can refill the fridge, but leave the freezer empty for now. When the power-freeze completes (at least 2.5 hours) you can refill the freezer, set the "ice" mode to block/crushed (IE something other than off) and then hit the "black reset button" to restart the ice-maker. IF it still will not dump the cubes then the ice sensor/control board may have failed.

Ice Maker won't work

Hello,

If your trying to save a service call you have your work cut out for you. The ice maker is a unit that sits by itself attached to the wall or part of the freezer wall.

There are many reasons why you do not get ice and I will list them.

1- Temp of freezer got too cold and has frozen the pipe that feeds the water to fill the icemaker.
check to see if the icemaker has any ice in the area that fills and makes the cubes.
If the pipe is clogged, very gently put a small tipped screw driver in the fill hose that sites over the ice making row in the ice maker. Be careful you do not push your screwdriver out the back of the refer.
Check to see the freezer temp is not too cold and is freezing that pipe. 0-3 degrees F is good.

2.- check to make sure your water feeding the fridge is on. There is an on off valve to allow the water to feed the icemaker when it needs to fill. This could be bad. there are reset proceedures for the fridge, but unplugging the entire frige for 1 minute and plugging it back in you can listen for the the valve to come on and see if it fills the ice maker resevoir.

3. If it fills and freezes the ice resevoir, then the sensor in the ice tray does not sense the frozen ice and will not cycle and kick cubes. At this point, unless you are super tech, you will need to replace the entire icemaker unit.

Hope this helps.

SAMSUNG RS253BAWW NOT WORKING

the ice maker wont cycle untill the temp of the ice is around 10 degrees so if the freezer is at 15 or 20 due to some other malfunction then you will see the maker full of ice but it wont harvest and make another batch. so you could have a sensor bad, control malfunction, refrigeration issue, compressor, defrost system malfunction(you mentioned ice build up)

Superba ice maker stopped working, door water still dispensing

Use a cup of water and just fill the ice cube maker with enough water for the first batch and the sensor will then begin making ice again.
My ice cube maker stopped working after I changed the filter. After reading countless posts about wiring and defrosting and using a blowdryer into the fill line I emptied my freezer and fridge, then unplugged it. I got no results after two days. I finally just put some water in the ice cube maker (the metal ice cube tray below the white plastic fingers that forms the cubes) plugged it back in and closed the door for a few hours and it worked. I wonder if I needed to defrost the unit at all. It was working before I changed the filter, then the filter was full and stopped water from flowing (or decreased the flow dramatically anyway).
Good Luck
