Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

It Starts and runs fine for about 15 minutes then

It Starts and runs fine for about 15-20 minutes then it begins to pop and then backfire and stalls. It might start again and run for a minute or so and then pop, backfire and stall. Try to restart but won't,Just cranks over. Let sit for awhile(cool off) and it starts and runs ok for another 15 -20 minutes and then dies again. It seems as though the ignition is cutting out. Almost seems as though heat is affecting the ignition. I noticed this problem come on slowly, popping once in awhile but kept running ok. At first thought it was me leaning off the seat.
I have checked the safety switches and all seem to be working properly. I even tried to by-pass the seat safety switch and it did not start. This mower is only 4 months old and is a Craftsman 42 inch, 20 H.P.Intek Lawn Tractor.

I think that your right. Sounds like your ignition coil witch is most likely located under the the flywheel cover. I know that on some briggs and stratton engines they are actually under the flywheel, just trace the sparkplug wires to know for sure. When the ignition coil beginns to fail they start slowly (spitting and sputtering) and then they get to the point to where they stop firing after getting heated up and adventually quit all together.

Chances are the gas vent (or gas cap vent, as the case may be) or air or gas filter are clogged or dirty. replacing and/or cleaning them should take care of the prob.

Your right. I found that when I took off the gas cap, I had some bubbles release. After I filled to brim again, I used the tractor until it started to fade, then released and re-seated the gas cap. It ran find from then on. Thanks!

You're welcome! It should be a regular habit to clean or replace as necessary all the filters the machine has. I learned that the hard way when I was a teenager using chain saws and lawn mowers. God bless!

Replace your coil. This happens on these older vehicles a LOT as the oil begins to evaporate out of the ignition coil. My '54 GMC used to LOVE to do this.

Stalling after about 15 - 20 minutes

Change your fuel filter first.
If the problem is still there your fuel pump is going bad.

My nissan 350z sometimes stalls after starting

after i replaced the battery in my 2003 350z, it would stall immediatly after i cranked it on unless i gave it a little gas. I fixed this by cleaning the MAF and throtle body valve. Total supply costs were $15 and took about 20 minutes. My Z is not only fixed but runs smoother and cleaner.

Engine Stalls out

The gas cap may be clogged.

The next time you run the trimmer and it starts to die, loosen the gas cap. If it starts running again, then you know that it's a clogged gas cap.

You may also check the air breather, it may be dirty as well.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.
