There is a sound coming from the back but is this just the compresser for the freezer
Usually there is only one compressor. Cold air is allowed into the refrigerator with either a vent door (damper) which is mechanically controlled by a numbered dial, or in fancier models, an electronic damper which opens and closes to regulate the temperature in the fridge.
The problem could be that the damper isn't working properly (usually the case, but not always) or that the thermostat or control board is not sending power to the damper motor.

It sounds very much like your defrost timer is gone. Pull the botom panel of the fridge off and you should see a circular unit with a screwdriver slot in it. Turn the slot CLOCKWISE only until you hear the fridge start up. If it does than you've gotten off cheaply. These defrost timers are inexpensive and, after unplugging the fridge, you can change it your self. It's as simple as changing a tire. With less bullwork of course.
