Can't get past passwords

I bought a G5 at a moving sale ... I got a great deal because there were no disks. The password I was given is wrong. Now I have a fancy paperweight if I can't get around the password. Can anyone help me?

Hi,

Try this to create a new admin account, then delete the old one you're locked out of (or change its password):

http://theappleblog.com/2008/06/22/reset-os-x-password-without-an-os-x-cd/

Or this from macosxhints.com, which may allow you to change the locked account's password from a terminal window. A more elegant solution, but doesn't always work - depends if the various files you need to alter are where they ought to be and are called what they ought to be called.:

  1. Boot into single user mode (press Command-S at power on)
  2. Type fsck -fy
  3. Type mount -uw /
  4. Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
  5. Type dscl . -passwd /Users/username password, replacing username with the targeted user and password with the desired password.
  6. Reboot

Good luck

Had the same problem. The password is in the software. You need the EXACT same OS install disks. Check the web as to the buttons you need to push when starting and it will boot off the CD. Then you need to do something that erases the startup password, under some TAB on the startup screen.

Passwords are CASE sensitive.

Remove hdd password or discover it.... I bought computer at a neighbor's moving sale and It has a hdd password on it. I'm unable to do anything....please help!

Well your somewhat out of luck. The only way to fix it remove the hardisk and buy a new one. Then you will have to install windows. You MAY be able to format the hard disk on another computer though to get past it.

However sometimes you can reset the password (very rare but worth a shot) by opening the pc up and remove the clock battery. Generaly its under a compartment on the bottom or under the keyboard. Wait about 10 sec or so, also make sure the power cord is NOT connected as well as the main battery is not connected.
Best of Luck
