My Compaq Presario PC has become unable to get any Internet access using IE7, IE8, Firefox, Google Chrome and other browsers and keep getting a 'unable to display webpage' or similar errors Also I can't 'ping' when I use the CMD box. I know that the Ethernet interface is working because when I use self-booting programs like Acronis and Linux booting diagnostics like Parted Magic, I can access my networked drives on another PC and can browse the Internet without a problem. It seems like something has happened to my XP Home operating system which is preventing the Ethernet port from working. Can anyone help please? Thanks - Johnny
XP or Vista ?
Go to Network - Properties - the network card. Make sure you have "Get network address automatically"
DOS box type ipconfig /all what's it say.
There are viruses that can kill TCP/IP
Get a copy of LSPfix It will check your TCP/IP programs.
I did have one XP machine that lost it's network setting, could never get it running without a reinstall.
If Linyx works, it's not the card.
DNS server... why is it 192.xxxx No DNS, no web !
In IE type in just 208.67.222.222 this should take you to "Open DNS"
Do you know how to change your DNS servers ?
Change them to 208.67.222.222 and DNS #2 to 208.67.220.220
That is the address to Open DNS... it's a good site and protects your PC as they check addresses.
Did you try typing 208.67.222.222 into IE ?
If it works, then there is a DNS problem (getting the IP addresses to go to a domain name)
can you ping your router? What error message comes up ?
Have you tried deleting your network card and rebooting the PC to reinstall it ?

Thanks for your help M_Butkus. I checked in Network Card> TCP/IP>Properties and it does have 'Obtain an IP address automatically' selected.

Hello again M_Butkus, The reason that the DNS Server is 192.168.2.1 is because it is running through an ADSL Router. My other PCs are all connected via this Router and they all have the same DNS Server address and work fine. Also with regard to your Open DNS, my Router is already setup with that by instructions which I obtained a few months ago from Open DNS. Because of this (and the OpenDNS tutorial) I don't understand when you say that I should change the DNS Server addresses on the PC to 208.67...etc. Perhaps I am being stupid?? Can you clarify please? Thanks - Johnny
