Oven wont regulate temp

My magic chef kitchen stove ( model number 318a-7 ) is causing me grief. when we turn the oven on it doesnt stop heating up. it will continually run until it is turned off. we sometimes have to keep turning on and off to get it to work on its own. any assistance in solving this problem without contacting repair man greatly appreciated. thank you

I've got a GE Spectra whose thermostat works very erratically. Takes forever to get to 350. If you want to get it to 350, you have to set it to 425 to get it up to 350. Sometimes it heats up to 450+, even though you set the therm to 350...makes baking extremely difficult...and makes me swear like a sailor? I hate to call Sears try to fix this. Seems it should be something we can fix/replace. Suggestions?

Is your temp control operated by a knob or push button?

the thermostat needs to be replaced. it cant tell what the temp is so it will just keep going.

  • chris hooper Nov 22, 2007

if youve already replaced the thermostat and that didnt fix it you need to look for shorts to ground. the bake elent has one line going to it that is always powered. the other side of that power comes from the thermostat. so it has to be a wiring problem or a bad thermostat

ive been in the appliance repair business for 20 years. the only thing that tells that element to cycle on and off is the thermostat. when you replaced it did you do it wire by wire? if not did you double check the wiring diagram to make sure all wires are in the correct place? only other rare possability is does you oven have a seperate selector switch or is it all built into the thermostat? if there is a seperate selector switch then you might have a problem there but like i said thats rare

This oven and range work from two separate regulators and it sounds like the one for the oven has failed. Have it replaced and that should get you going again. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Check sensor harness and harness connection between oven sensor and oven control. Replace oven temperature sensor (RTD) if wiring is ok.

If the oven is working but the control does not light up then you will have to replace the control.  If the oven doesn't work then will have to check and see if you have power to the control.  If power is there then the control is bad.
