Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 (M01E100) 100 GB Hard Drive

Maxtor 3100 green light on- getting no response from it or computer otherwise. I can hear constant clicking sound when I place unit by my ear. I purchased a new USB cord for it today and tried it and I still get the same response. Is there something I can do to at least remaove all my personal items from it. Please help.

Sounds like the drive could be bad. Clicking from the Hard Drive is never a good sign. While the Hard Drive itself is a sealed unit, the external case housing the drive is not. Most of these are universal connectors. You can try to remove the external casing and plug it directly into you system, but chances are that the drive is gone.

There are data recovery centers available that can try to recover the data for you but they can be relatively expensive. It just depends on how important the data is to you.

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If you can hear mechanical sounds from the case the problem is in the hard disk and moving it to your laptop isn't the solution. In that case check for a data recovery company at your area as sooner as posible. If the sound is no mechanical I'll tell you the way to move the HD. Describe me the kind of sound.

Maxtor 3100 80GB External Hardrive clicking/humming sound.


This could be an issue with the circuit board.I am facing a similar problem & shown it for repairing. And facing issue in sourcing the IC. Seagate is giving support for maxtor after it has taken over. Data recovery is possible only if the circuit is working.

The green light on my maxtor external 80gb harddrive comes on as usual, then the orange light comes on now and my computer does not recognize it at all (Windows XP). It's been working fine for maybe 5...


Shut it off and unplug it from power. Let it sit for a day before trying to connect again.

Make sure you've rebooted your computer before trying it again.

Hard drives fail sometimes but so do the enclosures to - so you may still have the data.

If it does work - backup everything immediately.

If it's clicking - that's the sound of death for hds.

Drive powers up but will no longer be recognized by my computer. Drive activity light does not flash.


Sound the interface cable going to the drive. Replace the cable, they are usually resoanable price.

Maxtor external HD motor died


Thankyou for explaining this in detail and i am afraid to tell you that if you think that the motors in the HD or dead, then the only way of getting the data off you HD is to find a data recovery specialist.

  • the minute you break the seal on a hd case, the hd will deteriorate because of foreign contaminants, e.g. dust get in there and damage it.
  • you cant swap the platters round either because all platters are different. if you swap the platters around, the hd will not have a clue what to do
