SOURCE: clogged defrost drain tube

You can access the drain tube from the back of the refrigerator. There is normally a trap located after the drain line exits the freezer compartment. Clean out the trap and it may solve your problem.

SOURCE: GE TFH27PRSA ice maker water fill tube and

all is normal with the defrost heater getting red hot.

as far as the inlet tube freezing, you most likely need a new water inlet valve. it may not be closing all the way and water is slowly dripping into the icemaker and freezing up right away. a new valve should fix your issue. here is the part that you need. http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-TFH27PRSA-%3d%3di1032629&PartID=1032629

Water leaking than freezing on floor of lower draw under ice maker in subzero 700tf freezer

If cubes are very large the ice maker may be overfilling and need the fill adjusted to allow less water into the maker. Otherwise check the fill tube (runs from the back wall to ice maker) for loose connections or cracked tubing. (In this instance the cubes would be smaller than usual.) If neither of these is the source, then look up to the highest point of ice (water flows downhill) for the origin. Suspect a stopped up defrost drain. Thaw and clear ice, then clear drain tube (DO NOT use a wire for this) with warm water and a turkey baster. Once water is flowing through tube and into drain pan under the unit the problem should be solved.

I know this is basic but did you check to make sure the ice maker didn't get switched off in the moving stuff around. Most have some manner of interconnect to shut down the ice maker if the receptacle is not in position - perhaps a wire got knocked loose?

We have extremely hard water in the East Mountains of NM. Our refrigerator Ice Makers only lasted about a year before the Calcium from the underground Calcium just killed them. I solved the problem by buying, from ebay, a small restaurant ice-maker. I Always fill it with filtered water, and it has been chugging away for years. Our water tested Harder than an Hot-tub maker had ever seen, even after going through our old, Sears, water-filter. Ergo - how hard is your water? Could that be the problem. Just a thought.

Hi hhsawin ,

Have you already check to see any ice blockage in the fill spout tube, this is the hose that caries the water into the freezer section and to the icemaker. If the elbow & tube has a ice blockage, it is usually best to replace the fill valve and the shut off valve. You can try to thaw it using use a turkey baster to spray hot water into the tube. Also there is a solenoid that lets water into the ice cube maker, have a professional check it to make sure its working correctly. Please remember your safety in doing checking and repair.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

The ice tray is freezing up . what can be done to fix this problem. I have a magic chef ice maker MCIM30SST

This answer came straight from the manufacture:

Stop the ice maker, and restart when the ice blocks melt. Select the
small ice size. Also Change the water in the reservoir.
Use water between 45 -90 F.

Not sure if that will do it but that is the only fix we could find straight from the manufacture. We wish you the best.

Water leaking inside the lower part of the unit... I need to clear the drain hole in the freezer,, how do you remove the back cover in the freezer do you remove the ice maker first ? or is there a better...

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. Since you did not mention any model number I will be responding in GENERIC terms. The procedure for a top mount freezer is different than a side by side. I am going to respond in the context of a top mount unit.
UNPLUG THE REFRIGERATOR
1. First remove ALL shelving in the freezer compartment
2. Then remove the ice maker. There are 3 screws that have to be removed in the ice maker. The lower screw and then the 2 upper screws. Completely remove the lower screw and then loosen the (2) upper screws until you can lift the ice-maker over the key hole slot mount holes and remove it. The wiring harness for the icemaker is then disconnected by gripping the bulkhead connector top and bottom to release the locking tabs.
3. Now remove the light bulb cover by releasing the two lock tabs with your thumb and pivot the cover toward the remaining tabs. Unscrew the light bulb and remove the bulb.
4. If there is ice on the rear cover you MUST manually defrost the unit. I recommend that you use a floor fan for about 2 hours. This makes a water mess but if you do not defrost the unit you will break the plastic air ducting during the access panel removal process.
5. AFTER manual defrosting remove all of the rear access mounting screws and tilt the panel top first at an angle to remove the top panel. I usually stick my finger in the ice maker tube hole to begin the tilting.
6. If you have to completely remove the access panel to clear the drain you will have to release the bulkhead connector from the panel by unlatching the 2 locking tabs on the female connector.
__________________________________________________________________________________
NOTE. You must also remove the bottom REAR fiber cover to gain access to the end of the compartment drain tube.
7. Remove the fiber rear cover / compressor access.
8. Inspect the drain pan and tube END for debris. Over time the END of the drain tube will self block from evaporation. Clear the END of the drain tube and use a shop vac to clean the drain pan. (not easy to reach!)
9. Remove any lint and debris from condensor coil and fan while you in this area! (nothing sharp) __________________________________________________________________________________
10. Use a cable tie (spot / Zip tie) to clear the evaporator drain in the freezer section if it is still clogged. You can use a piece of house wire if necessary to clear the drain. DO NOT use anything sharp as it will puncture the drain tubing.
11. Pour about 1/2 cup of HOT water in the drain and check to see that you have the same amount of water now in the drain pan in the bottom of the unit.

Reassemble in reverse order steps 7 to 1. (read below first)

Just so you know often ice build up is a result of an automatic defrosting circuit problem. You should check the defrost heating element and defrost thermostat for continuity BEFORE reassembly. If you have continuity reassemble everything. If either the element of the thermostat do not have continuity replace the one with NO continuity. Reassemble steps 7 to 1.

You can still have a defective defrost control even after all of this. If ice starts to build up again in 3 to 4 days after doing all of the above most likely the defrost control / timer (depending on model) will need to be replaced.

This is a generic top mount response. The procedure for a side by side is similar. Only the ice maker removal process differs slightly and you should be able to figure out how to get it out. If you need advice just respond with your model number and I will locate a manual "on line" that you can use for the ice maker removal process.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

So how many times has the ice maker stopped working? seems like you are having bad luck with these ice makers. One of the problems is the electronic modules on those models do that but I really don't know what may be causing yours to go so many times. yes the control board sometimes will stop them but it will stop a lot of other things too if that was the reason. Sounds to me the technician took advantage on that call just to put one in. The computer does have something to do with power but I think he or she took advantage of you. Now if you can pour tap water into the tray slots and it will freeze and drop the ice then the water control valve is the problem. You know I could make enough money just being honest with the customer. Try the water trick and let me know what happens and we will decide from there, OK? Thanks, Sea Breeze.

We have a GE Profile refrig, circa 1995. The ice

If you are sure it is caused by the ice maker or if it is not it can be fixed. The only way an ice maker would leak like that is if ice is blocking the inlet tube and when the water comes on the water is spewed in a different direction than the ice maker. Most times this is caused by a slow leak in the water control valve for the ice maker side at the rear of the refrigerator. You can stop the problem by melting the ice in the fill tube with a hair dryer and keeping an eye on it until you see ice beginning to build up there again. That would indicate a slow leak in the water control valve that is not closing all the way when off. The other reason for large pools of ice in the freezer is a frozen over defrost condensate drain behind the cover in the rear of the freezer and would require you to unplug power and remove the rear panel. I will try to get some photos and a link shortly that covers that problem a lot more in just a few minutes. Sea Breeze

I have a kenmore refrigerator model 36369262991. I have water accumulating on my top shelf. It drips from the thermostat control panel. what is wrong?

I had a similar problem on a Whirlpool Fridge. In fact, there is a good possibility that your Kenmore is made my Whirlpool. As you probably know, Sears doesn't make appliances, but contracts with well-known appliance makers to manufacture kenmore-branded products.

If your fridge is an auto-defrost model, whenever it auto-defrosts, water from the melted ice collects in a tray behind the freezer, and drains into an evaporation tray at the bottom of the fridge through a drain tube. Over a period of time, the drain tube can become clogged, and instead of draining out of the freezer, the water overflows into the fridge. The clue is that the problem is intermittent -- the dripping stops between defrost cycles.

The fix is to remove the liner panels from the freezer, melt and sponge out any collected ice, clear ice from the drain with hot water, and clear any gunk from the drain tube with compresssed air or a flexible "snake." I used 1/8" pvc tubing as a snake.

It isn't hard to do, but if you are nervous about disassembling parts of your fridge, you will need to get a pro to do it.
