Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

Bottom freezer intermittently gets too cold, frig ok

When I turn power off for several hours then turn it back on, the freezer temp is OK around 0 degrees for days. Eventually it gets too cold by a difference of -12 degrees. The refrigerator remains around 36 degrees. There is a damper w/ motor that controls the proportion of refrigerated air that goes to the freezer or refrigerator. I suspect the damper isn't working consistently and it intermittently sticks mechanical or ice?and diverts too much refrigerated air to the freezer when the refrigerator needs more air to cool it to its temperature set-point. Anyone have a similar experience? If so, how was it fixed?

See if you have some paperwork on how to test, etc. located in a plastic bag taped up to the underside of the fridge. Pull the front vent cover off and you should see (feel) a bag taped up there with the test paperwork in it. If you don't have it let us know and maybe I can email it to you.

SOURCE: Freezer quits working

Solution Found! The problem is when the temperature surrounding the refrigerator in the garage falls to < 45 degrees, the thermostat regulating the refrigerator will not call for the compressor to kick in to provide cooling (it's temperature requirements are being met). Since there is no demand, the compressor will not cycle, which is how the freezer is kept cold, and the freezer eventually warms up to match the refrigerator temperature. Frigidaire makes a "Cold Kit" that I ordered and installed from RepairClinic.com for $22 (Item #: 1037646; Description: Garage kit). It's basically a strip heater that runs off the control power to warm the thermostat and causes the compressor to cycle once to twice a day to keep the freezer frozen. After installation, the refrigerator stays at 40-45 and the freezer stays around 0 degrees.

I agree with your analysis, and recommend that you replace that fan between the two sections.

Amana bottom freezer temp 16 below. Turn temp down a little temp goes to 20 above

With that kind of spuratic actions I would strongly lean toward that the temperature control, also know as the cold control , is probably malfucntioning. Before I can 100% call that fact I would need more inforamtion, model number the most important. Also, a description of how the machine looks on the inside, like frost on the wall, ice, etc.

I just bought a used magic chef model# ctb1925grw & it has been plugged in for about 4 hours & the freezer is getting close to the desired temp (0) but the refrigerator is still not cold at all....

This was the control for the refrigerator. There is an air vent that comes from the freezer that this controls. If this air vent is closed off then most of the air will stay in the freezer. You may be able to take it apart and see if you can manually open the vent coming from the freezer to the refrigerator. Once you do this it should be ok.

Allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize.

Whirlpool frig. Freezer warm, frig seems ok.

Since the temperature is already 40°, the cold control is satisfied and will not run. Thus the freezer will warm up to 40°.

Okay,

What is your Freezer temp rating?
Did you check the refrigerant PSI rating?
Is your condenser restricted?
Let try adjust refrigerator to less cold and adjust more cold for freezer. and see what your temp rating.

Amana refrigerator warm

Chances are if they are getting cool but not cold-

1) the evaporator fan in the freezer is not running
2) Defrost heater has failed
3) Defrost sensor has failed
4) Defrost timer/refrigerator control has failed.

Check for ice build-up on the back wall of the freezer. If there is ice, unplug or turn the unit off for 6-8 hours with the doors open (put any food in a cooler with ice to maintain). Note water may come out of the refrigerator.
Plug the unit back in or turn it back on, close the doors, and check temperature after a couple of hours of operation. If all OK, you will need to have the above tested, or, if you know how to use a multimeter and can read a schematic/wiring diagram, I can instruct you on how to check the above.
