Our 20 something holly tree is dropping leaves from the top down

Give it a good soak now.

Maintain moist, well-drained soil unless growing a dahoon holly, which thrives in wet conditions. Improve soil drainage and increase fertility by incorporating organic content, such as compost, into the uppermost layers of soil. Irrigate soil when the top layer feels dry to the touch; though these trees tolerate drought, they thrive in consistent moisture.
3 Lay a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, on the soil surrounding the holly tree without pressing the mulch against the trunk. Mulch decreases soil pH, keeps weeds at bay and conserves moisture.

Spots on tomatoes

If the spots are mostly at the bottom of the tomato, more like one blotch, it is from not having enough lime in your soil. It is called bottom rot.Putting lime in the soil is called sweetening the soil with lime. This is what you need to do for bottom rot. If it is in other places and more than one spot, it could be from insects crawling on and defecating on the tomatoes or maybe a type of fungus or mold. Hope you only need garden lime. It will save your tomatoes from bottom rot since it is early in the year.

Is compost good for land?

Compost is good for land and can be used to condition soil, to fertilize soil, to add humic acids, or as a soil pesticide. In an ecosystem, it can be used to control erosion, to construct wetlands, to cover landfills, etc.

Landscape mulch in the fall problem

The uses of landscape mulch are not limited to weed control. Among the other uses of landscape mulch is as an agent to control erosion. Landscape mulch applied in the fall keeps the severe weather conditions of winter from eroding your soil and robbing it of valuable nutrients. And by insulating the frozen soil from the sun's rays on that odd mild day in the winter, you'll help your plants maintain the protective state of dormancy that they're in. As a bonus, when the landscape mulch decomposes, it will release valuable nutrients into your soil. Landscape mulch also improves moisture-retention in the soil, cutting down on your water bill in the summer.

Compost and Mulch Comparison?

Compost should be worked into the soil (eventually, at least) to make it more fertile. Mulch, by contrast, is spread atop the soil, both to protect the soil from the elements and to suppress weeds. While it is true that organic mulches will eventually decompose, thereby themselves becoming compost, their function as long as they serve as mulch is distinct from the function of compost.
