I called WD and they told me it was a problem with the drive, and that it shouldn't be doing that. They sent me a brand new one free of charge, and got me to send the old one back to them, free of charge. I just spent 5 hours reloading all of my content from time machine. I go to play some tunes and lo and behold, the new drive has shut itself off.
WTF?
does anybody know why this happens? the drive I'm using for time machine is a 750GB Western digital essential edition, and it's not doing this at all...
