This usually indicates that the handset is having a problem establishing a wireless connection with the base unit.
Try placing the affected handset in the base charging cradle for a few seconds to let them sync to each other. Remove the handset and try again. If you are able to use the phone again, but only within a few feet of the base, there is probably an issue with the radio or antenna in the handset (assuming all other handset works fine). If all associated wireless handsets have the same scanning message and only work close to the base, then the problem is likely with the radio or antenna in the base, instead. You may be able to see a loose or broken connection if you wish to dig around - but if there's nothing obvious - you're probably better off leaving it alone and obtaining a replacement instead. Before beginning - be sure to unplug the AC power and telephone wire from the base and the remove the battery from the handsets.
Without a specific model number for your phone, only a generic solution can be provided. There may or may not be additional suggestions to help you solve the problem if you provide the Uniden model number.
