Top half of upright freezer is warm

Hello Karen;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The top half of your freezer is warm because your cooling (evaporator) coil is on the bottom.

With your unit there are generally two cooling problems:

1.) Frozen Drain - You freezer will go through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. When this occurs, everything shuts down with the exception of your lights. Your defrost heater turns on for about 20-30 minutes, defrost you cooling coil and them turns your unit back on.

Most common, is that you have a frozen drain. If you have a frozen drain, when your unit goes through the defrost cycle, if your drain is plugged then the condensate builds up on your cooling coil and restricts the air flow. Use a hair dryer and melt the ice.

2.) Freezer fan motor is bad - Your freezer fan motor may be bad. This is easily replaced.

Ok, Lets get it done. I have faith in you.

a.) Unplug your unit.

b.) With a screw driver remove the 6 screws holding the bottom cover. You control may be in the way.

c.) I know you can do this. Remove the back cover. Is you cooling coil blocked with Ice? Defrost with a hair dryer. Do not use metal tools, you may damage the cooling coil.

b.) After defrost, Is you cooling fan running. You can do this as well. There are only two contacts to remove and a ground wire. If it is not running purchase a new one.

I have faith in you Karen. Call me and I will walk you through this.

Our Amana side by side is not cooling very well in the refrigerator or freezer. Stuff at bottom of freezer is frozen, but stuff at top of freezer is melting. Same with the fridge. Stuff at the bottom is...

It sounds like the unit may be "frosted-up" or the circulating fan has stopped running. (regardless of the frost-free system). I have had to take them apart, (the inside rear wall) and defrost behind there. Push the button on the door switches and see if the fans start to run. If they don't start blowing or make squealing noise then you need a new fan(s). So a service call may be in your future unless you want to dive in with a hair dryer and tools. In any case, enjoy eating everything before it spoils.

Freezer not keeping items frozen

look at the inside coil in the freezer it shouldnt be frozen if it is ur defrost is possibly not working its a long black bar that goes thru the coil see if its getting power and heating up if all this is ok check the fan ab ove the coil if hte fans not running then check and make sure it has power if it does and still not spinning then u have a bad fan motor replace and this should fix ur problem if fan is working then u probably have a freon problem if its a freon problem then hit me back up and we will go thru the charging process and make sure ur compressor is running its in the back and black make sure its warm and not hot hot

Refrigerator area is not maintaining cold, freezer seems fine

The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.

If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4 - 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer area.

Fan in freezer not working

It runs when the compressor runs except when it's in the defrost cycle. If you have an electronic control instead of a defrost timer the control could be the problem since it runs the fans. You can test the evaporator fan. See how here> How to check everything
