SOURCE: Ink System Failure with error code: 0xc05d1281

I had the same problem and took Guru NinaE advice....1. Unplug power cord from back of printer while it is on. 2. Wait for 60 seconds after it is in sleep mode. 3. Press and hold "Print Photos" and "Red Eye Removal" at the same time and while holding the two buttons down, plug in the power cord into the back of the printer. 4. The printer display should go blank or Reset might show up on the display. When this happens, touch the ON button and the printer will reset itself.

SOURCE: Ink system failure

Open the printer as if to replace an ink cartridge. On the print head there is a black plastic arm about 2 inches long. Re-connect this with the white cog wheel so that the protruding part is in the center of the black arm. Close lid, power on and job done.

HP c6180 Won't print magenta dark or light

Regarding your question about the HP 02 Light Magenta/Dark Magenta printing issue (lack of print output), are you observing the error message(s): "R6025M, R6031M" and/or "INK SYSTEM HAS FAILED" with your HP Photosmart C6180 printer? Based on your problem description, this could be poor connectivity between the ink cartridge and the printer's PRINTHEAD or the PRINTHEAD has reached END-OF-LIFE. Unfortunately this particular printer writing system is now ~13 years old, and depending on your print volume, the PRINTHEAD may have suffered permanent electrical degradation*

Check chip condition, pictured here on our Inkjet411 support site (2nd picture circled in red): http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1372

However to be sure, you may want to get a new HP 02 (OEM) ink cartridge to completely rule the refilled cartridge out of the equation as cause of failure. Otherwise, proceed to our suggested diagnostic steps below.

If one of the steps cannot be performed please go to the next one. If you do not have one of the buttons go to the next suggested solution.

Solution One

A. NON KEYPAD PRINTER MODELS: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=2377
1. Get the unit into the "Support Menu" by following the steps below:

A. - Press and hold the "left arrow" key.
B. - Press the "Setup" key and release both keys.
Display should say "Enter Special Key Combo"
C. - Press and release the "OK" button.

Display should say "Support" and display the FW rev (something like R0616R)

2. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says "System Configuration Menu".

3. Press and release the "OK" button.

4. Display should say "Hardware failure status". If not there already, Arrow Key over to "Hardware failure status",

5. Press and release the "OK" button.

6. Display should say "Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear".

7. Press and release the "OK" Button. Message changes to "Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue".

8. Press and release the "CANCEL" button as many times as necessary, so that, either the "Welcome to Photosmart Express" screen appears, or, the "Ink System Failure" screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.

9. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.

10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer

11. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message "USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER" followed by "PRESS OK TO CONTINUE". Press OK. The Printer will start the "ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS". Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.

12. To verify printer functionality print a SELF TEST PAGE. If SELF TEST prints, then printer is ready for use or Software Installation.

13. Retest the printer.

B. KEYPAD EQUIPPED PRINTER MODELS: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=2391

Steps:

8. Press and release the "CANCEL" button as many times as necessary, so that, either the "Welcome to Photosmart Express" screen appears, or, the "Ink System Failure" screen appears.

9. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.

10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer

11. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message "USE POWER BUTTON TO XXXXX" followed by "PRESS OK TO CONTINUE". Press OK. The Printer will start the "ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS". Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.

12. Retest the printer.

Solution Two

(1) Open the printer and wait for the carriage to slide over
(2) Remove the ink cartridges from the print head.
(3) Use cotton swabs dipped in hot water to thoroughly clean the print head and each ink cartridge.
(4) Repeat this until there is no ink residue coming off on the cotton swab.
(5) Once finished, allow to dry and replace the cartridges
(6) Try to print something now

Solution Three

If both solutions ones and two fail it means your waste ink absorber is full and needs to be replaced. The absorber is a small sponge like pad inside the machine underneath the ink cartridge cradle. It sits underneath the cradle when the cradle is all the way to the right inside the machine. To fix this problem the pad needs to be replaced - see video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km3szjM49ZQ

Solution Four

If all the other solutions fail it means the permanent PRINTHEAD inside the machine has likely failed; unfortunately the PRINTHEAD is not replaceable in this printer model*

*The HP 02 ink series printer models have an electronic PRINTHEAD within the base of the carriage assembly (responsible for pulling ink from the 6 ink cartridges and then firing the ink droplets onto the paper) - the HP 02 PRINTHEAD typically has a maximum life of approximately 40,000 pages (~15,000 page average). Unfortunately, the permanent PRINTHEAD is not replaceable. http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=2054

---
CAUTION: Be advised, the use of HP 02 compatible/clone cartridges (i.e. sold thru the internet from overseas) are known to be problematic and may cause printer errors and/or permanent PRINTHEAD damage due to incompatible ink formulations. We do NOT suggest refilling these types of ink cartridges.....refilling of HP 02 or HP 02XL original/genuine ink cartridges is only suggested!

If, after performing the suggested procedures above, you still have not reached resolution please let us know. For any additional questions please contact us directly: Inkjet411help@gmail.com

If you need to purchase a new ink cartridge(s), we suggest you try a remanufactured ink cartridge from http://www.inkplicity.com/ as their ink cartridges typically have the lowest cost in the USA and have a high reliability rating.

Blue ink won't print

The cyan print head nozzles maybe blocked.
Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.

Not printing correct colors all come out light brown or pink

For severe HP OJ 6500/6500A/7000 print quality/missing color issues, or incorrect color output, there could be an air bubble in the ink cartridge(s), an air gap between cartridge and PRINTHEAD, or a portion of the PRINTHEAD is dry (quite common), so you should first perform a CLEAN PRINTHEAD procedure from your printer control panel.
It is first suggested you print the SELF TEST or PRINT QUALITY REPORT (under TOOLS menu) to aid in identifying which color is causing the issue. Check that cartridge or cartridges to ensure they have plenty of ink inside.
NOTE: If one or more the colors were previously dry fired during printing (i.e. if you continued printing using only a few colors to one, air may have been accidently ingested into the ink lines between the cartridge(s) and PRINTHEAD. To recover from this problem, you may have to run the CLEAN PRINTHEAD procedure 2-3 times.
If a problem persists then it is suggested to review the steps outlined on the following HP 920 support pages, including printhead removal/printer cleaning and service station cleaning. It is suggested you refer to printer manufacturer instructions first as the Inkjet411 procedures are provided for general guidance purposes only. A dirty service station can cause poor image quality and/or ink cross-contamination between different colors:
http://inkjet411.retailinkjet.com/?page_id=1495
If the problem still cannot be corrected, then the PRINTHEAD may be dry and may need to be flushed (i.e. with warm water as it could have dried out, but this is a function of how much you print). Remove and thoroughly flush all ink ports for 2-3 minutes...thoroughly dry printhead prior to re-installing. Retest. For complete instructions refer to video here: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=2412
Worst case scenario the PRINTHEAD may simply be electrically damaged or at end-of-life (while Officejet 6500/6500/7000 printer PRINTHEADS are rated for an estimated 15,000 pages, the average consumer may only see up to a 10,000 printed page throughput) and may require replacement. A severe failure of the PRINTHEAD is typically accompanied by error messages such as INCOMPATIBLE PRINTHEAD, REPLACE PRINTHEAD or INK SYSTEM FAILURE. NOTE: The PRINTHEAD will eventually fail in time. For more information on the how the PRINTHEAD works, watch the video here: http://inkjet411.retailinkjet.com/?page_id=1983
To verify Printhead electrical performance, activate the Tap 41 diagnostic test, (i.e. Pen Status: Pen OK).....for printer model instructions please visit: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1813

Ink system failure, everything was fine, i put new ink in just like i have many times before and now it won't print anything, it keeps telling me ink system failure on the monitor

This error usually means you are at the end of the life on the printhead or the printhead assembly has a defect causing it to stop working. You can try removing all of the cartridges with the machine on. once they have all been removed unplug the power cord from the socket (be sure printer is still on!) wait about 30sec-1min. then plug back in. the display will Read out of ink install and an icon for each missing color. Reinstall all cartridges and close cover. it will take a minute or 2 for it to cycle and prime the ink. The display should read ink Sysytem Failure, power down machine. Press Power button to shut down, leave for another 30sec. and then turn back on. If the error displays again you will have to contact HP for in warranty service or replacement options. Note: if you are out of Warranty it is a good idea to shop for a new printer via Costco, Walmart, or an Office Supply Store, it will save you $$$
(a friend had this issue and they were going to sell her a new printer for $30 more than staples plus shipping!)

Replaced empty black ink cartridge, wont print black ink even after cleaning and aligning the printheads

The head of your printer cartrige (black) are not detected by the printer because it was damage and need to be replace. So that no more black ink could print anyway.
