This means there is something stuck in the machine. You need an allen wrench to put in the bottom of it to spin it. There will be an opening right in the middle on the bottom of it. This will get it spinning again. If there is something hard in it you will hear alot of noise when you turn it on.You will have to clear this out. Also about once a month you should run dry coffee grounds in it to clean it out.

Hi, well to assist you to troubleshoot your problem, i have given you a site above, that will step you through, how to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve your problem. If you do wish yo DIY also one MUST obtain a service manual, they may be able to be found on the 'net, or from the manufacturer.
Unfortunately, with just this symptom, it's pretty hard to tell exactly what's wrong, other than it maybe a sensor, the door switch, the pump, the inlet valves, the "Brain" the... the... you get the idea.. as really most "Faults" simply stop it from working, leaving it mutely idle.
However first have a look at this below,it may or may not apply, but also may well be worth a go... I leave it up to you.
Ok so your dishwasher won't do anything... it justs sits there and "Hums" you can't make it respond to any controls, and the ONLY way to Stop it. is to unplug the unit, replugging back in it simply "Hums" again and will do nothing.
Now this happens because, the STOP Button, is pressed and the "Door Opened", during the Wash Cycle. This should NOT be done. You should NEVER TURN IT OFF MID-CYCLE. you should instead, Simply, pull on the handle, to Open the door, the system will take care of everything, after, you close it,and pick up where it left off. The turning OFF, makes the machine "Think" that a New Cycle, is going to be done, before the old one is finished, and resets itself to do it all again. But it still has water, that's not meant to be there so it must dump it out.
Now, the FIX. Take the Dishwasher, out, and tip over on it's side, tip to about a 45' angle. Water will come out from underneath, this is from a small "Overflow" reservoir. this reservoir has an "Anti-Flood" switch. The removing of this water will "Reset" this Switch, and allow the dishwasher to work again.
So what happens, is this, when the STOP button is pressed Mid-Cycle, the machine must "Dump" whatever water is still in the machine, into the "Overflow Reservoir". This water then causes the Anti-flood switch to jam, and this stops the machine, until it is reset,by the above method.

it is my professional recommendation, that if you cannot or do not wish to DIY, then to get the best and cheapest result you should get a "Quote" for repair, from, an, Approved Service Center. Now, this point is very important for a good result, Always contact, their "Local" or a, "Head Office" Of Your brand Model number, in your case. Ask them, for a referral to an authorised servicing center, where you then FIRST, ask ONLY for a "Quote" as to the cost and type of repair. Now, when you get the information you want, then you can decide as to repair of replacement.

1998 discovery discharges battery 48 hours after new one fitted and same happened amonth ago when battery was disconnected for new alternator no signs of any discharging to be found

Put an ammeter between battery terminal and main earth lead see how much current is being drawn through it. Should only be clock, alarm etc. If higher take the fuses out one after another till you dont have a lot of current going though it and thats the faulty circuit.

My garage door hums but does not open. It had

Sounds like you have a bad start capacitor. It sits next to the motor and is about the diameter of a silver dollar and about 5 inches long. You can get one at any good door opener service company.
