Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Ref Rotel RA-930AX Stereo integrated amplifier. There is no output from the right speaker channel. I have gone through the process of elimination by swapping speakers and cables around and checking all sources i.e. CD, Tuner, Aux and Tape and established that the source of the problem lies with the amplifier. Can this be fixed by repairing or replacing some internal component within the amplifier?

I was after a more technical answer than the one I got. Being an electrician myself, my natural curiosity had me wondering if it could be fixed D.I.Y. with a little background information from somebody who can point me in the right direction in what to look for inside the amplifier.

Replace the large power output transistor, it is on a heat sink at back of unit, use only OEM part, the bias of most aftermarket "generic" replacements will not work and leaves you chasing your tail.

Hello Martin. You have taken the correct steps so far. Good for you. Now that you have isolated the problem, take the amplifier to a reputable repair shop and get a free estimate on a repair. After they give you a price tell them what u have already done and offer them half of what they are asking since you already isolated the problem for them and saved them all that time. Good luck with it.

Try interchanging the speakers. If the right channel works, you have a problem with your speaker.

REPAIR ASSISTANCE

ROTEL RA 980BX
Fault: No output from left channel. The right channel is working fine.

Added some photos and circuit for reference

While testing the amp noticed that the left channel is giving switch on off thump while powering ON and OFF the amplifier. It happens when there is DC voltage flow through the speakers. It shouldn't be there. And the thump is there only on the left channel. While testing the amplifier section found that all the transistors where idling at mentioned voltage. All Base pins where around +/- 0.5volt. and the output is almost 0.012mvdc.

Integrated amplifier for Mordaunt-Short Avant 908i

Use an amplifier with NO MORE than 150 Watts per channel or you be buying new speakers. At this power level don't expect booming bass boost without damaging the speakers. The Rotel generates 130 per side which is very near the safe maximum for those speakers... and the specs look good. If you are not satified with the sound, the speakers are LIKELY the problem. Look at getting good commercial speaakers instead of CONSUMER grade speakers. Go to a music store dealing with bands and musicians and view the products they have to offer. Consumer speakers often fail when people turn up too much bass. At high listening levels hearing damage can result.

Rotel processor bypass for Audio Research SP10

If I understand you, the 'sound' of the AR preamp is what you're trying to preserve. Presumably you're just running a phono through it as nothing else needs a preamp these days.

The multichannel inputs bypass all of the Rotel's processing except the volume. Use the Front L and R.

Need manual for ra 840bx4 & wattage output when remote speakers?

Lets try the simple stuff first. This whole problem could be caused by a dirty switch contact. Pick up some electronics cleaner from a local electronics shop and spray the switch (from the inside of the unit). Work the switch on/off a number of times then respray one more time. That should clean out any dirt that is there. Try the unit again and hopefully the problem is resolved. If not, then the switch itself may need to be replaced. When you get the cleaner, get one that contains a lubricant as well. This will help to prevent the problem from coming back again.

I'd suspect that one of the two output transistors on that channel has gone bad. If you are unsure how to test or troubleshoot this, then you might try replace both the NPN and PNP outputs and catch the bad one that way. If your amp uses an output module then you would of course have to replace the module which would replace all the output transistors on both channels. Good luck. Another thing to look out for, is the emitter bias resistors. They are the large white ceramic ones near the outputs. Sometimes one of those will open up too. They will be of a very small resistance value like .5 ohms (point five ohms) or something in that general ballpark, and have a wattage value of typicaly 5 watts. So they are pretty big resistors. Be sure to check them all even if you do find a bad output transistor. They will often go out with the transistor. Good luck.
