Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

It appears that the water is coming from the coils in the freezer section. I collects at the bottom of the freezer. When the door is opened, it melts and runs out.

Hi, The defrost drain behind the rear freezer panel is plugged. Remove the rear panel and clear the ice away from the drain. Then you will need to flush the drain hole with hot water to make sure it is open.
Some models require an after market drain heat kit.
Please get me your model # and I can look this up to let you know if you need that heat kit.

Thanks
Vic

Is the freezer section cooling properly. If yes, then problem is drain hole blocked in freezer section. There is a water drain hole, which runs to the drain line. But if the drain hole is got clogged by ice, then water will leak from other end and you get water in bottom drawer.-------- try manual defrost procedure.----------

The manual defrost reset procedure is as follows : ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. if you have water leaking down from the freezer into the fridge you have a blocked drain in the freezer,if you pulled off the back inside wall of the freezer and melted the ice off of the coil you should have noticed that the water wasn't draining down the drain hole under the coil.pull off the back inside wall of the freezer, look under the coil and you'll see a drain hole, when the freezer defrosts the ice melts and goes into the drain hole and down into the pan at the bottom of the fridge where the compressor is and it evaporates, your drain is blocked and the water is draining into the fridge section.unplug it,melt out any ice with a hair dryer, now you have to clear the drain line,i use a steemer to do this,it blows steem down into the drain and cleans it out in no time but if you don't have a steemer you need something that will push air down into the hole like a turkey baster or even a shop vac, pull off the hose and stick it into the other hole and then you can blow through the drain line with it,when you think the line is clear pour hot water into the hole,if it drains through your done,if not keep hitting it,also if you open the fridge door and with the hair dryer heat up the middle ceiling in the back, that's also part of the drain,in the middle of the ceiling and back wall where they meet, heat it up for around 5 minutes and then try the water,it will clear out,it could take around an hour or so to do it.

From what you described the defrost drain trough is frozen up. The drain tube or the opening in the drain trough is stopped up with some sort of debris and is frozen over.

Each time the freezer goes into a defrost cycle it melts the ice on the coils and the water has no place to go. The result is that water will leak into the freezer compartment, collect on the floor of the freezer and freeze solid.

Refrigerator isn't cold enough, but the freezer is fine. Model number is PSS26MSWASS, Serial number is GM439772, I turned up the temp for the Refrigerator, but its not that cold.

This problem is related to defrost. The defrost cycle is not running as it should be. The other possibility can be ice blockage in the ventilations. The defrost is not working,.The evaporator coil in the inner section of freezer is got blocked by ice .
Try manual defrost reset procedure: ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. If the same problem occurs then it's defrost problem. The defrost board and the defrost thermostat/heater is not functioning properly and it has to be checked and replaced.
-------------------------------------------------
Check the damper if there is too much water collected in the damper then press the damper and remove the water collected in it. The procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the refrigerator section and the refrigerator section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. Now this problem which you mentioned. In this problem the freezer works but no cooling in fridge, this happens if the thermostat is not functioning or the heater is not heating. Then the ice starts getting collected on the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is at the internal section of freezer. If too much ice gets
collected then this ice blocks the fan in the freezer section from functioning and this blocks the damper section with ice getting collected there. This all procedure is controlled by the main defrost board of the unit. Now if the damper is not got blocked with too much water or if the ice is not got collected on the damper area then check the evaporator coils. If there is too much ice got collected on the coils, then takes a hair dryer and melt the collected ice. Then see if the problem returns again. But if there is little bit ice collected on the coils and fan is running properly then it's not a problem. In that case main defrost board is faulty and it has to be replaced. The main defrost board is working but its not controlling the functions as required so the freezer works but fridge section not getting cold..

The freezer keeps freezing the coil in the back of the freezer how do I put it on defrost

Hi,

If your refrigerator is not cooling but your freezer is still working then you most likely have a problem with Ice buildup. Sometimes the ice will start to form inside the refrigerator on the bottom of the freezer compartment, even though the refrigerator section is not staying cool.

1. Empty out the freezer section so that you can remove the bottom panel that covers the evaporator coils. Side by side refrigerators often have the access panel in the back of the freezer.
2. Use a hair dryer or fan to speed up the melting of the ice. Towels will be needed to soak up the water. A wet/dry shop vac and a hair dryer work the best. Melt with one and collect the water with the other.
3. Take the couple of screws that hold the defrost coil loose and remove the heater. With an Ohm meter check the resistance of the coil. If the coil is bad you will get either and open or shorted circuit. If you get a good consistent resistance then it is okay.
4. If your heater coil is good and the fan/blower is working then you probably need to replace the defrost timer or advanced defrost control board, whichever is in your unit.

Take care....
