did you lose your key? here is a link to buy one, they are generic so you might be able to go to a local lawnmower shop for that. if it wont start with the key check your safety switches at the blade control lever under the panel and under the seat. riding lawnmowers that sit out get rusted all over, look for rust and bad connections under the service panel and battery compartment, sand connections with sandpaper..

Sounds like you are on the right path, maybe some wires on the ignition were replaced backward, and you are sending +12v directly to ground? Does it blow right away?

Sounds like the safety switch in the seat is bad or disconnected. Look under seat to see if anything is unplugged.
