Ntfs is missing

To resolve this problem, replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file:
  1. Use the Windows Vista startup disks or the Windows Vista CD to restart your computer.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to select the To repair a Windows Vista installation using Recovery Console, press R option.
  3. Type the number of the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted, and then press ENTER. If no administrator password exists, just press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command): cd \windows\system32\drivers

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.oldNote This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, the file is missing.
  6. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\driversWhere cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows Vista CD, and drive is the drive where you installed Windows Vista .
  7. Remove the Windows Vista CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit at a command prompt, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.
  8. Restart the computer.

How can i install vista in my lenovo g550.i have installed xp priviously, but,now want to install vista in it.i have the copy of vista home premium os cd. please help me.

1. Backup all your files. Windows XP has a "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" under System Tools under Accessories under All Program. Use it to create one (large) file -- copy that file to a DVD-recordable disk or to a USB memory-stick or to an external disk-drive.
2. Verify that you can read that file -- writing a "bad" copy would be horrific.
3. Access the LENOVO web-site -- looking for device-drivers for your model of Lenovo,
that will not be contained on the Vista CD. Download them, and save them to a CD-recordable disk (not a USB disk -- you may need these device-drivers, in order to enable the USB ports after installing Vista).
4. Insert the Vista CD. It should "autorun" something, asking your permission to start the installation of Vista.
5. Follow the on-screen prompts.
6. After the install completes, use "Windows Update" several times, to get all the security-fixes that have been issued since the release of your Vista CD.

I had my comp. fixed and they put windows vista home premium on here and i can't play my old games that need xp what can i do

You can do 2 things:
1 - try to run them in XP mode  - right click on its icon, then Properties, then Compatibility, check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' and select Windows XP in the drop down menu and finally at the bottom of the compatibility tab, check 'Run this program as administrator'.
2 - install , configure it and in it install XP and all the soft with problems, starting with the games.

How could i get windows vista into my windows xop for free

Unless your PC is fairly new you will not be able to run Windows Vista in the first place even if you could get a legal copy of it for free which I know of no way of doing. Go here and see if your PC will even run Vista. The upgrade advisor will tell you if your PC can even run Vista. You have XP which is a stable OS after many years of updates. My advice is to stay as you are until you buy a new PC. When you do purchase Windows 7 and forget Vista. I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and it is superior to Vista hands down.

Microsoft updates

If it just started to do this due to some update, a simple System Restore to the day before this started.

Instead of dealing with such workarounds, it is probably better to use Parental Controls (Vista), the replacement for it (made for Windows 7, compatible with XP) or software like Cybersitter, netnanny etc.

Anyway hopefully a system restore will work, but the update will return (if you want to keep the system fully updated as you say)

  • Start
  • Programs
  • Accessories
  • System Tools
  • System Restore
This forum will have more and more family security articles soon

in XP Home individual updates can be removed by going to Add/Remove Programs and clicking Show Updates (not recommended unless you are certain what updates do and how it will affect the system)

Hope this helps
