Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop

1 Answer

Dimension 5100 will not turn on

Fist time this happened, checked obvious things like power cable, power unit, possible suspend/lock up eg pressed switch for 5 secs, all ok, noticed mobo lcd is permanently lit green when power is connected but pc does nothing when switch pressed.
So unplugged a few things from mobo, took out switch unit and re-connected and pc powered up. However when switched off would not switch on again. So repeated process of unplugging stuff from mobo and reconnecting and power came back, so from this point on did not turn pc off, always set to standby instead and it has carried on for 3 months, ocassionaly do a restart or even switch off for updates, but as long as it was switched back on immediately it worked. But the inevitable happened it was accidently switched off overnight and cant get it back on again even with unplugging stuff from mobo this time.

Try checking your Computer Management Services.

I had a similiar problem with a laptop. Just stopped working one day. Could not shutdown because it would not restart without disconnecting power. Could not reboot, because it would not restart without power being disconnected.

Checked Computer Management Services and found some of the services had been turned off.

Try this and let me know if you need more help.

Canon mp630 printer - error 5100, says to turn printer off then back on again. This is happening every 1-3 printed pages and also happens while printer is sitting idle.

5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width)
The unit is not homing, check for obstructions.

You can also reset using the service menu
1. hold RESUME then press & hold POWER
2. release RESUME, then press it twice, the light should go amber then green again.
3. you're now in service mode (you can release POWER now)
If the timing strip has stuff on it the reset in the service menu will not fix it.

Hi Martz!

After looking at your description I have to say Yes!
  • If your machine doesn't function at all that means it is not receiving power.
  • If you were unable to hear the FAN of the power unit, then there is a greater possibility that the power unit is dead.
  • But if you see any LED indicators on in any area on the mother board that means your power unit is working well or partially.
  • So first check the power CABLE. Then the power unit. You have to check both.
  • Make sure that your Processor FAN functions well.
  • Make sure that your CMOS battery is not dead (0 charge).
Feel free to contact again if the problem persists. Please rate the answer as well!

I have a Dimension 5100. There was a big thunderstorm about a week ago and our power was out for maybe 4 hours. Now, the computer will not turn on. It, along with the monitor, printer, router, etc. are...

you mostlikely blew a fuse in your power supply, either that or your cord became damaged, to check the cord, plug it into another computer or a monitor, 99% use the same type of cable, if it is your power supply, you need to remove the ps from the desktop, obviously while unplugged and undo the screws for the ps casing, then simply remove the old fuse and replace it

Dell 5100 will not turn on

Power "Outages" are not the problem, it is when it comes back on again, and the Power Switch is still ON, that's the problem, the "Inrush" current of reconnection, frequently "Blows" the Power Supply's, I suspect that is what has happened.. You probably need to replace your power Supply, simply open unit up, and remove PSU, via four screws at rear, and get a similar unit, they are relatively inexpensive, under $60.00 usually. Reinstall PSU and connect up all power plugs and you should be good to go.

Dell Dimension 5100 will not power up. Was working fine, turned power off, will not turn back on. Power supply tested OK, tried different power switch and ribbon cable connector, replaced mother board...

Have you checked your monitor? Try your monitor on another PC and check it is OK. Once you change the MB battery you effectively "Kill" the PC, as all the settings in the BIOS are removed and must be reprogrammed. You must enter the BIOS, and select "Default" setup and then reboot, you must do this regardless of what else is done first.(A bit hard when you can't see anything" You say... "tried different power switch and ribbon cable connector" (sic) exactly what "Ribbon cable/Power switch"? Anyway as said check monitor, if it is OK, we will proceed from there, then, you must check your video card, test it in another machine, if possible, to see if thats OK, if it is OK, then it is now likely that you may have a Mother board problem. If you can, try another Video card to see if you get Video on screen. see we need to establish "Known Good" items, once we know whats what, we can then go on. Now if any of these things tested are faulty, Monitor, Video card, obviously replace them, however IF they are NOT faulty, as related it may be the Motherboard, Remove the RAM, and see if anything is on screen? If yes, replace RAM, If still NO, then take any cards out, and check, if then OK, replace cards one by one until you get to the one that stops it, there is your problem, replace it. All we are trying to do is get anything on the screen, if we do, then you must redo the BIOS, as related before. Now if you get it going it still may not boot through to windows desktop, if this is the case, after you boot press F8 and select safe mode, when you get asked if you want safe mode or system restore, choose system restore and choose a date before you had a problem that should get you back. You just have to logically work through, until you find the faulty "bit" and replace it.

If there is no activity whatsoever when you press the power button on than you have likely blown the internal power supply fuse. This will need a technician to repair.

Upgrade

according to this cnet.com (http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/dell-dimension-5100-pentium/4505-3118_7-31429803.html) the dual core is not an option. I'm not sure if that means that Dell doesn't offer an upgrade, or if it's not possible. First, open your tower and look over the Motherboard for the manufacturer and model. Once you have those, google them and look for the specs of what cpu's are supported by that motherboard. If you can and do decide to upgrade, check with the CPU manufacturer to see how strong of a power supply you need for the more powerful CPU. You're might be ok, but you might need to upgrade the PSU (Power supply) with the processor. From your description, I can't tell what motherboard is in your Dell. That will be the limiting factor. Get the motherboard specs and you'll know what you can do.
