There will be different answers for different people. Changing the writing speed to the slowest available (6X for me) may help you – it did not help me. However, after ruining a big pile of DVD-Rs, I seem to have found out what my problem is – there is a conflict between my Picture Motion Browser and my InCD Helper. Here is how I got to my conclusion (I am running Windows XP Professional and have Nero 6):

On Friday, I spent over an hour on the phone with Sony Support (“SS”). SS had me create a new folder on the C:\ Drive, open Picture Motion Browser, select a media file, click the disc creation icon and on the settings tab of the disc creation window: (1) change the “Location of Temporary Files” to the New Folder and (2) check “manually select a writing speed”. Then I started the disc creation process and selected the lowest writing speed available to me (6X). At 50% I got the “Authoring Tool” error and the disc would not burn.

SS next had me restart my computer in Safe Mode (hitting F8 as it starts up) and select “Safe Mode with Networking”. Then I was able to burn several times without an error (even at “Optimum Speed”). Before I got off the phone with SS, he suggested that I disable all items at startup that are not necessary.

Yesterday, I clicked “Start”, then “Run” then typed “msconfig” in the Box, then clicked “OK” to bring up the System Config Utility. On the “Startup” tab (with my brother’s help) I disabled most of the startup items because they were not needed (if my brother was not familiar with a particular program, he looked it up on the internet to see what it did). Among the programs I disabled were InCD (InCD.exe), Nero Back it Up (NBJ.exe) and Nero Check (NeroCheck.exe).

After a Restart, I then tried, in normal mode, to burn a DVD-R with the New Folder/6X setting, with no luck. Bad burn.

My brother then suggested that I go back to the System Config Utility, click the “Services” tab and check the box “Hide All Microsoft Services”, so I could see only the non-Microsoft services that were running (I had 9, which included InCD Helper).

I disabled all the non-Microsoft services, restarted and tried to burn a disc at 16X – GOOD BURN. I then enabled InCD Helper (and kept all other non-Microsoft services disabled) and tried to burn – BAD BURN AT 50%. Next, I enabled all the services except for InCD Helper – GOOD BURN. Then, did another good burn. Then another.

So, turning InCD Helper off seems to be my work-around for using Picture Motion Browser (I kept the temp files location set to the New Folder). Of course, I will need InCD Helper to format my Read-Write CDs. Maybe InCD in Nero 6 is a problem but not in Nero 8. Also, For some of you, there may be conflicts with another program.

Hope this helps.

I put pictures on dvd-r disc but they won't play on my dvd player. it does play on my computer.

Just copying the pictures onto a blank DVD won't work if you're trying to make a disc that will play in your DVD player. It's not formatted correctly for the DVD player to recognize it and play it back. All you've done is create a data disc, which works with the computer only.

To make a DVD that will act like a "normal" disc you will need "authoring software". A good free DVD authoring program is DVDStyler. Among other things, it lets you make slideshow DVDs, which is what I gather you're after.

DVD authoring can be time-consuming and somewhat confusing, but you only need to it once for the disc. This page has information about the authoring process, different authoring applications, types of DVDs and more. There are many other sites and videos as well.

Good luck with your project, and thanks for using Fixya!

I can not play my dvd on sony dvd player i get message canot play.i have a sony dvd recorder in which my laproscopic surgeries are recorded.if i play my unedited dvd on player it runs or plays very well...

My guess is the Pinnacle software isn't writing correctly. Read this from the Pinnacle support site.

Use this FAQ to troubleshoot any problems where Studio is failing during the process of burning the DVD.

  1. INSTALL THE LASTEST PATCH:

If you have Studio version 12, download the latest version here.

If you have Studio version 11, download the latest version here.

Note: Studio 11 patches will only patch a previous install of Studio 11.

If you have an older version of Studio (Studio 9, 10, or 11 etc), it is advised for you to update to the current Studio software. The current version is Studio 12. Click Here to go to the Studio 12 Upgrade page.

How to download and install a patch:

  • When downloading the patch make a note of where it is being saved to. We recommend saving the patch to the desktop.
  • Before installing the patch, make sure that you do not have any other programs running. Studio must not be running.
  • Once it is fully downloaded, double-click on the patch to begin the installation.
  • Follow any on-screen prompts to complete the installation. Reboot the computer after applying the patch.

  1. MAKE DISC SETTING, SAFE MODE BURN OPTION: In Studio, click on Setup -> Make Disc. Under the box marked Burn Options, select "Safe Mode: create disc content and then burn" by clicking on the radio button in front of the setting and then click OK. While troubleshooting this problem, always use this setting.

  1. RESTART STUDIO: Shut down Studio, then relaunch it. Try to create the DVD again using the safe mode setting above.

  1. RESTART THE COMPUTER: Try opening the door of the DVD burner. If it won't open, then shut down Studio, then restart the computer. Launch Studio and try to create the DVD again using the safe mode setting.

  1. MEDIA:

BLANK MEDIA IN THE DRIVE: Make sure that there is a blank, write-once media or rewriteable media in the DVD burner.

TYPE OF DVD: Make sure that your DVD burner supports the media you use. As for any problem with burning a DVD, we recommend customer use rewriteable media to reduce the number of wasted DVDs when they have to troubleshoot a failure while burning DVDs. In this case, if you have only used rewriteable media, (RW) we would also recommend trying to use a write once (-/+ R) DVD and erasing the RW media.

BRAND OF DVD: Pinnacle recommends using a name brand of DVD, i.e. Sony, Apple, Memorex, etc. Also we recommend trying a DVD from a different manufacturer to see if the problem is related to the brand of DVD that is being used.

NOTE: Check with the following site to find information on the media being used.

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

  1. LOWER THE WRITE SPEED: In the Make Disc settings try lowering the Write Speed to the lowest possible setting.

  1. GET THE LATEST FIRMWARE: Ensure that the DVD burner being used has the latest firmware update from the burner manufacturer.

  1. CHECK DISC SPEED: Make sure that the disc media speed (printed on the media or on the media box) is compatible with the DVD burner. Some burners may not work with media that has a higher maximum supported burn speed. For example, if the burner being used supports 4x disc media, do not use 16x disc media.

  1. DELETE AUXILIARY FILES: Try deleting the Auxiliary Files for the current project. To do this, go to File -> Delete Auxiliary Files and select "Delete auxiliary files for current project." Press OK and try to re-render and burn the project.

  1. ALWAYS RE-ENCODE: Go to the Make Disc settings and check the box called "Always re-encode entire movie".

  1. SAFE MODE: Try burning with the safe mode option selected. To do this, go to the Make Disc settings. In the Burn options are select the option called: "Safe mode: create disc content and then burn.". This step does not apply if you are using Studio 12 since this is the default burn method.

  1. CREATE A DISC IMAGE: In Studio, click on Setup -> Make Disc. Under the box marked Burn Options, select "Create disc content but don't burn" by clicking on the radio button in front of the setting and then click OK. Then click the Create disc button in the Make Movie section to begin the image creation process.

If the image is not created, it is likely that the problem is a Render problem rather than a burn problem. Click Here to see the FAQ on Render problems.

If the disc image file is created successfully, burn the disc from the new disc image by selecting "Burn from previously created disc content" in Burn Options.

NOTE: When troubleshooting all burn or playback issues, it is recommended to use rewritable media to avoid wasting discs.

SONY HANDYCAM DCR-35E

I had the same problem. When I purchased my HDR-SR11 camera some four years ago, I was running XP and the PMB Disc Burning worked well. When I changed over to Windows 7 I kept bombing out like a lot of other users. The problem was that I was using an old version of PMB (3.0.00). I went to the Sony web site and downloaded the latest version of PMB with an upgrade (0810a.exe) This fixed my problem and the Disc Burn function workes perfectly now.
