Re: MAGNAVOX 27-inch STEREO TV w/CRT display

Hello obpett,

You may have a problem whit your audio section of your TV. This would be troubleshot in the following manner: Using a schematic diagram working back from the speakers locate the point at which you get an indication of audio signal, using either an oscilloscope or a audio test amplifier with probes. This will let you know the stage at which audio drops out. If the audio is part of a single processor the test at the out put of the processor to the amplifier, this will determine if there really is audio going into the audio amplifier. If there is no audio then the problem is in the processor or the stage prior to the amplifier. If there is audio at this point then the problem is in the amplifier or in its biasing circuitry. Now if you know nothing about electronics, I would suggest that you take your TV to a TV repair shop. If you do have experience you will need a schematic diagram of your TV, a multimeter, an audio test amplifier, and an oscilloscope to perform these tests mentioned above. I hope this helps.

Let me give the reason I do things this way. While I want to provide a service I feel, that I bear some responsibility in the actions that you may do in reference to your TV set. So while I am here to provide help, I will always tell a customer to go to the proper repair facilities first, before attempting repairs, I know this seems odd but to just tell a person go do this or that is not wise thing to do in a legal sense. In an event as stated if you do not have experience in electronics, I would suggest going to your local TV repair shop.

Thank you,

TV will not display picture or sound except for 1 station which appears to be 440. I can't change the channel either at the dials or remote. The display says EAS.

DONT USE the remote that came with your TV

use the buttons on the box to change the channel. did the channel change?

usually when someone only has one channel its because they are changing the tv channel not the cable box channel

think of it like this:
the TV is a monitor and should always be on the same channel (3, 4, hdmi, or whatever) its actually the box that tunes and the tv always stays on the same channel.

so if you change the tv channel you are no longer watching the output of the cable box.

USE the remote supplied by your cable provider

No sound and picture

If you have the older TV with a CRT, here is my answer. By now this TV has a loose capacitor. The capacitor will not have any solder around the pin for a proper ground. Next, there may be a large power resistor that is not attached to the board as for the same reason as the capacitor mentioned. I have not repaired your TV model, but experience tells me what to do. You asked, so I'm sharing. These are just one of many grounds. You will need to solder the vertical IC, Horizontal transistor, horizontal transformer, flyback transformer etc. You will have to inspect the board for any and all solder grounds. Also, be sure to resolder the small board that is attatched to the CRT (pull this board off carefully and then solder). You should not have to purchase any parts, resoldering will bring it back to life.

Good afternoon, i have a 27 inches ferguson TV and it only ask to select languages but now i don't have a remote what can i do for it to work ?

You might be able to select menu options using the channel up or channel down button on the tv itself. If this doesn't work, try the volume up and down buttons.

Hello I can hardly hear on all of my channels. I have directv and I can't get a reasonable volume. Is there something I can do to fix this problem?

Directv low volume problem.
One sure way to eliminate Directv's low volume and any other volume problems in general is by installing a stereo compressor between your Directv receivers audio outputs and your TV's audio inputs. (Simply plug the compressor's outputs into TV and your receiver outputs into the compressor's inputs). By correctly setting the controls on the compressor, you won't loose the dynamic program content. Not only will it raise the volume level to where you want it be, it will also prevent it from exceeding any set level you chose, actually limiting how loud any sound can be. These settings are fully adjustable. In other words when you switch from Directv back to a dvd or any source, no more sound blasting, you can set levels to be the same now since you have raised then adjusted Directv's level to normal. Plus a compressor will raise those low hard to hear audio sections often found in movies. This is the reason we used them all the time in the recording industry. Another benefit is it levels all channels on Directv. The result, channels are now the same volume. This is what I'm doing to end the problem. Hope this helps someone. J Pynckel

Low volume on Direct TV channels

This is a known and ongoing problem with Directv since June. They claim they are trying to "level" all the channels so they are the same volume level. The result so far is that ALL channels are suffering from low volume. Given this has been going on for two months now, Directv may never solve this - General ineptitude - denials - but if you call and tell them you are having low volume, they will give you a three month $5 credit. CALL and COMPLAIN... the only hope we have to get this fixed is to cost them money and time on their customer support lines.!!!!

Cant change ''favourite'' channels or get ''menu''

Make sure the batteries are fresh in the remote control ( I am assuming you are using a remote control to access the on screen display) If you have a universal remote and replaced the batteries you most likely will have to enter the code for the specific TV that you have.

Locked channels on a tv

You need to replace the eeprom IC in your set. Hospitality tv's ( i.e. hospital, motel etc...)have a eeprom IC that restricts programming and the use of the menu so guests can't mess up the tv picture or get unauthorized programming that they want you to pay for or just don't offer more than 27 channels. I have done this for customers before. The eeprom IC is an 8-pin IC that is right next to the microprocessor and is easy to change. Be careful soldering on an RCA board though...too much heat will lift the solder pads.Good luck!
