Picture does not appear. Audio produces 'THUMP' and low RUMBLE when channel changed, but no discernable MUSIC or SPEECH, even if signal is present. Unit purchased at RS approx 2005 and registered with provided manuf. warranty card. Need to have out-of warranty repair to restore operation. Please advise!
You may have a problem whit your audio section of your TV. This would be troubleshot in the following manner: Using a schematic diagram working back from the speakers locate the point at which you get an indication of audio signal, using either an oscilloscope or a audio test amplifier with probes. This will let you know the stage at which audio drops out. If the audio is part of a single processor the test at the out put of the processor to the amplifier, this will determine if there really is audio going into the audio amplifier. If there is no audio then the problem is in the processor or the stage prior to the amplifier. If there is audio at this point then the problem is in the amplifier or in its biasing circuitry. Now if you know nothing about electronics, I would suggest that you take your TV to a TV repair shop. If you do have experience you will need a schematic diagram of your TV, a multimeter, an audio test amplifier, and an oscilloscope to perform these tests mentioned above. I hope this helps.
Let me give the reason I do things this way. While I want to provide a service I feel, that I bear some responsibility in the actions that you may do in reference to your TV set. So while I am here to provide help, I will always tell a customer to go to the proper repair facilities first, before attempting repairs, I know this seems odd but to just tell a person go do this or that is not wise thing to do in a legal sense. In an event as stated if you do not have experience in electronics, I would suggest going to your local TV repair shop.

My digital signal through my set top box was really good until a couple of weeks age. Now it pixilates and distorts all the time. Not always on all channels and not only at certain times of day. Sometimes it's perfect on some channels while others are unwatchable
