One would not stop chirping even after changing batteries four times. Electrician told me that it had "expired" only after 2.5 years though they should have 7-10 year life. The other two had "gone red" and we suspected they would follow. I can't determine if these specific ones have been recalled. They were installed early in 2015. They failed shortly after a power outage (a week or so).

Sounds like you may be due a warranty replacement. Call the Kidde "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 with your Model number, serial number, and manufacturing date. The original sales receipt would be helpful but probably not absolutely necessary. Good luck. *Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle. As far as which adapter to use, either should work fine. The 90 watt will run cooler. I have seen the 65 watt go up in smoke when being used on a continuous basis.
As to the battery not charging, unfortunately, it sounds like you may have a problem with the internal power supply. The orange light is showing that the battery is discharged. If this light doesn't turn green after the laptop has been plugged in for a couple of hours, you are not getting the battery charged. Power the laptop down, remove the battery. Check the contacts on both the battery and laptop battery connector for any foreign material or "Gunk" and for any bent or broken contacts.
Hope this helps!
