ok thanks - but i think what i am trying to say is - is a computer the best thing to use to play mp3 backing tracks through a powered mixer and if so should an external soundcard be used to boost the laptops capabilities?

I use a 1/8 (3.5mm) headphone cord in the headphone jack connected to the amplifier with a 1/4 adapter on the end. Works well for me.

The way I used are with an adaptor,in one side are a 3.5mm terminal and in the other RCA you connect the cable to the headphones output on the cpu to the amplifier directly

How do you get this thing to play in shuffle mode?

Each MP3 gizmo is different but "shuffle" players are extemely simple and cheap, actually, they are too cheap...
My experience: has two "buttons": play and volume. Press play and they play. They have a function to go fast forward or backward in your "listing" when press continously and change volume. You can't select a specific track.
You can load music files from your computer through USB, can create folders but it won't make difference to your shffle gadget.
I used it in my car's MP3 player and it reconized shuffle player as a simple pendrive, playing tracks and foloders.
If you have some specific question, feel free doing it in comment.
My best advice: better spen some more and buy a decent MP3 player.

My ipod can't play the musics, what is the problem?

MP3 players can only play music files in mp3 file format. You can download mp3 music files from the Internet toyour computer and then copy them to your MP3 player. For your CD collection, you need to convert your CDs tomp3 music files onto your computer or download them from the Internet and thencopy them to your MP3 player.
You can do this using Windows Media player and Rip the CDs - Media Player willcreate a MP3 music file for each music track.

IPod plays about 5 tunes then stops

The tracks that the ipod skips would be of certain formats the ipod does not support ..... when you load the tracks with itunes it normally prompts you with a dialogue box and asks whether you want to convert it to the specific format ..... Try reloading this way and it should work .,... if still a problem restore it and reload
