I used a program to "clean" my system and now my DVD/CD player will not play music CDs. It reads data files all right and I can still play music files that are on my HD. How can I fix it as it is not

Go to Device Manager.

(WinXP example; Start > Right-click on My Computer > Left-click on Properties > Left-click on Hardware tab > Left-click on Device Manager)

Left-click on the + sign next to - DVD/CD_ROM drives.
Right-click on the NAME of the CD/DVD drive.

Left-click on Uninstall.

(A 'Squawk Box' will come up, "Warning you are about to uninstall this device. It is OK. Click on OK)

Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen, restart your computer.

(WinXP; Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart)

When Windows fully loads, there should be a 'pop-up' out of the system tray, "Found new hardware device", and perhaps another one, "Found CD/DVD drive xxxxx"

This 'slaps Windows around', and makes it find the address to the optical drive drivers.

No? Didn't work?
Then suggest you post the motherboard manufacturer name, and model number.

Or; post the computer manufacturer name, and model number.

(Model number is on the back of the computer, next to the Windows product key; or up on the side of the computer tower.
Some older models have a swing door in the Front Panel, and once opened the model number is down in there)

Also post what Operating System you are using.
(Windows XP, and Windows 7 are two examples of an O/S)

I'll see if optical drive drivers are available, and guide you in downloading AND installing.

Post back in a Comment.

No sounds

Please provide the make and model of all the hardware in question.

Also keep in mind many devices will not work after a fresh reload of Windows. This is do to the fact that vendors use there own drivers to tell Windows how to interact w/ there hardware. Keep this in mind when ever reloading an Operating System.

I would suggest looking for a Driver Installation CD/DVD that would have come w/ the motherboard or pc. Any add-on hardware should have software as well.

DVD Sound Missing

Hello folks,
If you install another program like Nero xxx. Nero adds or can take away window media player's format from playing certain codec’s. Any program installed like burner software can do the same. This is a software issue. To help fix it download & install codec's from this site. This should help to regain sound for DVD formats.
Free download.
Other items. Some PC's can loose DVD sound in windows media player 11. Check that you're version of windows is up to date. Last ditch effort. Insert the DVD & open windows explorer. Right click on the DVD drive & see what the format is. (Ex: ***.vob, ***.mp4, ***.divx). Than search either Microsoft or Google for the matching codec's. Download & install it from the web.
Suggestion. Use only one playback software program. Bouncing between programs is not suggested. Find which looks & sound best for you & uninstall the others if not needed.
If by chance non of the above has helped or fixed this issue, please list the program you are using to play DVD's & the format of the DVD.

Good luck all!
