1979 ford f250 400cid is vapor locking after engine is shut off for a few minuets and then tried to restart. Carb. has been over hauled, pump and filter change. engine is not running hot. Vacuum leak?

When the carb was put on did you use the bakelite spacer which is about one quarter in thick. This keeps the heat from the carburetor and is much more efficient than the thin paper gasket. If there is a bakelite spacer be sure there is a paper gasket installed on each side.

check your fuel vapor canistor for restricted vent line there could be a possible orfice valve inline towards tank wich would not let the tank breathe causing vapor lock

hesitating when from a standing start, then running well can be caused by having too big a jet size. I dropped the size of the jets on my Holley 4V, and it solved that part of the problem. The accelerator pump will push in too much gas, momentarily "drowning"the engine til you get enuff air to mix with the gas.

Are you talking about filling the gas tank>> If yes,,, That is NOT vapor lock... thats just the angle, speed of delivery, size of hose in vehicle, etc that causes the gas to spit out,, try not putting it in so far, and use a different angle.. (mine does the same thing!)..

Vapor Lock is when the engine/carb get so hot that the fuel vaporizes in the fuel lines and carb...THEN "vapor" cannot be pumped into the engine... and it wont run... now ya know!! :)

1979 Leocraft Motorhome. With a 454. When the engine gets hot it stops receiving fuel. Any ideas? Changed fuel pump and collapsed fuel line section.

Sounds like vapor lock. Vapor lock happens when the fuel in the lines gets way to hot and boils/vaporizes and causes stalling . Have the fuel lines wrapped in an insulated wrap or relocate them away from heat sources. Sometimes winter grade gasoline will cause this also.

You don't say if the dash lights go out when it quits or just the engine? Something like the fuel pump is losing its supply so start at the fuze box for corroded terminals and/or fuze blades.

98 and 99 intrepid was manufactured with weak fuel pumps causing them to vapor lock try pouring cool water on the fuel rails on the intake to calm vapored gas then try to start it. Even the temp gauge at half way mark is probably still low on coolant causing engine to be warmer than normal causing the vapor lock to fix this problem replace the fuel pump with a 2000 or newer intrepid fuel pump that carries a little higher psi to prevent vapor lock from reoccurring this pump is compatible with your 98 it will plug right in

I have a 1979 Toyota Celica, it sat for years. I have lost my job of 17yrs and i need a good car. I have had a carb, fuel pump gas tank all replaced, the car runs good cold after aprx, 7 miles it chokes...

check the routing of the fuel line if it is near anything that gets hot ie: exhaust,transmission it may be causing a vapor lock also look for rusted fuel lines as they MAY be letting air into the line but not necessarily leaking, if the pump is mechanical operated by the engine( cars run on fuel and air not air and air) it will induce negative pressure in the line thereby sucking air into the line, check where the pump is mounted if it is electric it should be mounted below the bottom of the tank

Could be a vapor-lock problem where the gas in the carb is boiling out.
You could try carb cleaner sprayed into the air cleaner to verify.
Could also be the fuel pump relay if equipped.

You'll have to check for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure next time it quits.
Could be ignition module, a relay, fuel vapor lock, or a list of other things.

Hi,
What you describe sounds like the fuel in the bowl of the carb is evaporating. A thing to check if you are able is the fuel pump. A pressure test on the fuel pump will determine if the diaphragm in the pump is able to hold pressure after the 302 is shut off. A hot carb will evaporate some fuel in the bowl after shutdown. the pressure of a good fuel pump will add fuel as necessary.
If the carb bowl is empty when trying to start it will take a few turns of the engine a a couple pumps of the gas pedal to get gas to the engine.
This is just a suggestion to try. Sort of test before you buy kind of thing.

Wont start after sitting a few days unless primed with gas in the carb. Replaced fuel pump and filter

primer pump in carb is bad it's easy to fix and will need to buy carb kit to get it all it is is a small rubber piece that helps pump gas into the carb good luck.
