When I release the clutch on my 42 inch, Craftsman II, Diehard, it won't move forward or backwards

The belt seems to tighten and the big pulley over the rear axle moves very fast, but nothing happens. Could my problem be the clutch or transmission, I hope not/

Sounds like the drive belt isit running as fast as the pulley it is either stretched or has come off not getting power to wheels.

SOURCE: I HAVE A19.5 42 INCH

are the wheel / axle keys in the shafts ? make sure they are in the shafts with the wheels

provided you have correct tension on drive belt and belt is good and pulleys are all good , and spline on top of gear box input shaft is good not stipped ( as well as the pulley spline )check splines on shaft and pulley carefully

you should have movement of the variable displacement pump in the trans if all is good here ?

sounds like you may have a stuck bypass actuator in the box or the oil level has got low
and needs refilling and bleeding of air

make sure the lever is actually moving the swash plate for the transmission

if trans has a stuck or broken bypass - trans will ned opening up
let your local dealer take a look gearbox job on hydro units are not exactly easy
to fix unless you know what you are doing night pay to let local dealer repair it for you !!!!!!

cheers

The mower has no power & the belt is squeeling., this is the upper drive belt. I had a craftsman mower that did this a few years ago & the front pulley was loose, however, this one seems to be...

If the Engine is running fine and you are still not getting power to the hydrostatic drive, you probably have a loose belt or a pulley that is starting to seize up on it's shaft, by the sounds of it I would guess the latter, a squealing belt is caused by the coefficient drag of the belt against the pulleys it operates on. Check all the pulleys for free movement and make sure the routing of the drive belt is correct. Check the wear of the belt itself if it is cracked or burnt in spots this will cause slippage also.Good Luck.

I have a Craftsman mower 917.280810.It barely moves when clutch is released, even on flat ground.I changed the belt-no help. The transaxle pulley is engaged, and when I put my hand on the tire, the tire stops...

I don't quite get you, if the belt is running but the rear axle is not turning then your transmission is shot. If the belt is running and the rear axle is spinning with no forward or backward motion, then someone took the back wheels off and put them back on without installing the keyways.

The tractor will not go forward or backward it starts right up but will not engage

1) The drive belt between the engine and transmission has broken or jumped off a pulley.
OR
2) Your hydrostatic transmission is dead.

DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGERS UP INSIDE A RUNNING MOWER TO SEE IF THE DRIVE BELT IS MOVING.

Tractor belt slips so blade doesn't cut

There is an electrical clutch that drives the belts. This clutch may be worn. Some will have adjustments that will allow it to tighten them up and not slip. Now when your tractor is running and you turn on your blades there is power sent to this clutch, it is mounted on the engine shaft and has flexible metal plate that is pulled into a pulley buy an electro magnet this plate is worn or could be full of grass/dirt. You need a good strong light, with the tractor OFF, get under and look at this clutch, look for grass/dirt or if the metal has changed colors meaning it has gotten very hot. If it has gotten very hot it is time for a new clutch... Sorry if this is the case. Good hunting.

Mower Belt Won't Engage

The fact is that belts don't stretch. They wear down on the sides, causing them to ride deeper in the pulleys and they APPEAR to be longer. Check belt "width" to see if it is less than one half inch. Most craftsman riders use half-inch (AKA: "A section") belts.
