This is a known fault with the f500 Compaq series. Compaq do offer to fix if you send the machine back to them. I believe that the problem is with the processor on the Motherboard overheating, Compaq have been changing over the board in order to achieve a fix. The web address for more info is:

This might be due to windows getting corrupt or due to virus on the computer. It can also be due to some software causing startup trouble.

Restart the computer and right after start tapping F8 key(its on the top row of keyboard) continuously.
You will see advanced boot menu
Use up/down key on keyboard and select "Last Known Good Configuration" and hit enter
It should boot you up.

If that does not work, do the above procedure and instead of Last known select "safe mode" from the list.
Run antivirus scan and check if it removes virus.

If that does not help try to restore windows to an earlier date when it was working.
You can get to system restore from Start -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore

If still nothing, reinstall windows.

Monitor STFC (Self Test Feature Check)
* Turn off the monitor
* Plug the monitor power cord directly into the wall socket to remove any surge protectors or APCs from the troubleshooting equation
* Unplug the monitor video cable from the back of the computer
* Turn on the monitor
* The floating dialog box should appear on screen against a black background. If the issue appears during the STFC, the monitor is defective. Get it replaced.

Fn f1 diidnt do it, hdoes any one no if i can fix it wihout having to replave moniter or connection switch?

I think you are hitting the wrong Function Key combinations. Why are you using an external monitor anyway? What is wrong with the laptop's LCD Screen?

Plug in an external monitor and see if thedisplay shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crtmonitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vgaport. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will showon most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systemswill require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold downthe FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thruF12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will havethe icon of a display.

Each time you press the FN key plus the correct Function Key it toggles the Display between three stages (Show on Laptop only, Show on External Monitor Only, Show on both the laptop and the external monitor).

Same issue with no words

This is usually caused by the cable between the monitor and computer being disconnected (or partially disconnected) or damaged. Video card failure on the computer can also cause this as well. If you have access to a laptop, or friends laptop, try plugging in the monitor to the laptop. If starts working correctly, then cable was unplugged or video card has failed in computer. Also check cable connection on back of monitor.

On most notebooks, switching between the internal display and the external display is done by pressing Fn+F4.

Not transfering display but can't see whats going on.

Power up the monitor first then the laptop and the video will switch automatically to the monitor.
The other way, when the laptop is powered up press the Fn key + F4 key, This toggles the video output between the LCD and the external video connector.

Compaq Armada E500 PC Notebook Display Completly Out

Hi Jeryl; Im sorry to have to te3ll you but when the power went out it sent a surge to the external monitor . This blew the monitor which in turn blew your video display. This is a not so uncommon problem with laptop displays. They are very fragile. Especially when it comes to power urges. The only way you can fix this is to replace the monitor. Even this may not fix the problem. It could be any one of a few thousand parts inside your laptop. Best advice would be to let your local repair shop do the repair. Hope this has helped. If it has please accept this answer. Thank you; HELP2DIY
