The Seagate FreeagentGo comes with a Seagate manager software, there is a provision for encrypting your private files so i would be using that application itself for encrypting.

What would you be using to encrypt the files/folders? BitLocker? Some other utility?

If you use the utility that comes with the drive, you will be able to access all of your files and folders that you encrypt on the drive privided that you don't forget your password. If you want to make sure that the drive is protable (can be used on multiple systems), you need to make sure you enable Travel Mode with the Seagate Manager software. You must remember the password in order to access your files.

What type of message do you get when you try to access them?

From your description, it sounds like you need to take "ownership" of the files/folders you are trying to open.

Seagate Free Agent 1.5TB doesn't encrypt

I was fumbling around with this as well. I found a manual on my external drive itself. I had to read through it carefully before i saw a small note.

Note: After you open your Encryption folder on the first computer and user account with which
you use Seagate Manager, it will be saved on that computer so that will never need to
enter it again. When opening your Encryption folder from another computer or user
account, however, you will need to enter your password.

I have yet to test it by creating another user account, then attempting to access the files. I am confident that this is the answer.

Free agent doesnt encrypt

I Posted a solution to this prob but i don't see it anymore. Your ext drive is Encrypting your folder. It just knows you're the one using it. If I took it and plugged it in to my computer, it would recognize my user name as t0mthab0mb and prompt me for the password. Try it. Create a different user account on your computer, then try to access the encryption folder from the new account.

How I can "Decrypt data files" on Win XP Professional.

Since you reinstalled the OS, the certificate for the user has changed. You can try the following methods, but there is no guaranty it will work.
These method apply only if the computer name and users name stays the same as the original. If the machine name or the users name or the users privilege changed, these method will not work.

Only the following people can decrypt an encrypted file:
· The user who encrypted the file
· Any user who was designated as a recovery agent before the file was encrypted
· Any user who has the public key or private key for the recovery agent or the user who originally encrypted the file
· Any user who has been granted access to the file
Members of the Administrators group cannot decrypt files unless the person who encrypted the files designated them as recovery agents before encrypting the files.

Note You must be the original user who encrypted the file or a designated recovery agent for the file to follow these steps

Method 1:
To remove encryption from a file, follow these steps:
1. Use Windows Explorer to locate the encrypted file that you want to decrypt.
2. Right-click the encrypted file, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab, click Advanced.
4. Click to clear the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, click OK, and then click OK again.

Configuring FreeAgent for Mac OS

Lesson No. 1 - Never buy hardware or software from a store at which sales staff think the best way to answer your Mac questions is to convince you to buy a PC.  Lesson No. 2 - Reformat the drive using the Mac Disk Utility included with your MacBook after consulting with a store at which the sales staff know there is more to the computer world than PCs.  If you only intend to use the drive on your Mac, choose the option Mac Extended Journaled when rewriting the drive. There is also an formatting option to use the drive on both PC's and Macs. But I'm not going there.
