SOURCE: MIxer quit working while mixing 3 batches of oatmeal cookies

Hi. Kitchenaid's warranty is 1 year.

Most likely, the plastic transmission housing has failed, causing damage to the working parts inside your mixer. Take it to a local repair place and have them work up a quote to repair it. It will take at least a month to get the parts.

SOURCE: 4.5 quart. Why doesn't it turn on?

It is not turning on because the power is not getting through the entire circuit. First easy thing to check is the carbon brushes under the black screw caps on the side. If they are worn out just replace them. They are keyed with one corner shaved off so line the key up with the blocker inside the hole where the brush goes. Use a torch to look in there to see it in one corner right at the bottom. You could also remove the back cover and make sure there are no broken wires there, it's not uncommon for one of the bottom wires to break off by the plate they plug on to.

How doI fix mixer that leaks oil out beater holes

There ate two ways to fix this problem, but first there is the matter of understanding what is leaking. The oil you see leaking is actually a food safe vegetable based gear grease. The grease separates during heavy use (years of service) or when the mixer has not been used for an extended period of time. (months or years) The recommended way to fix the problem is to do a full tear down then clean then add new grease and a new gasket, cost (By Kitchenaid at a KA service center) around $140.00 US + or -, It involves shipping and around ten days in time. The second way is kinda simple and does not cost anything. Get a towel, thick and soft to protect your finish, get your wife or husband, get an extension cord, spread the towel out on an open counter top, plug the extension cord into the outlet, turn the mixer upside down on the towel, have your significant other hold the mixer by the base while you plug the mixer cord into the extension cord, turn on the mixer no more than 2 or the second click on the speed control switch / lever, hold the mixer upside down like this while the mixer is running and keep it running for at least three (3) minutes, turn the mixer off and turn it right side up and turn on again for two minutes, then do it again two or three more times, upside down for a couple minutes then back right side up and so on and so on, after about 15 minutes stop. put everything away, you are done. What you have effectively done is re-mix the grease and it should be good for another couple of years. When it starts to leak again re-mix again. Or send it to KA for the rare and unique opportunity to spend a hundred bucks that you don't' want. hope this helps. By the way if you get some drops in your mix it will not hurt anybody. But you do not want to eat a great deal of it or you will require the use of a laxative afterwards.

I bought a used Hobart A200 20 quart stand mixer that hesitates or 'gets stuck' when mixing dough or other thick (hard to mix) material. When running without a load, or only a light load it doesn't stick...

First of all, I want to say that it is common for people to overload the A200 mixer when mixing dough. The owner's manual gives an extensive chart for various substances typical of what people may mix. Depending on the consistency of the dough, the maximum batch size varies, but as an example: 9 lbs. max with 40% absorption ratio thin pizza dough, 1st gear only, 5 minutes maximum mix time. I remember this particular batch size/specification because as a technician who works on these mixers frequently, I had a customer attempting to mix 20+ lbs. of that 40% pizza dough for much more than 5 minutes and didn't understand why the mixer would stall and why his mixer was so hot he could nearly cook eggs on it's transmission case. So, a word of caution (9 lbs. at 40% A.R. is approx. 7 lbs. flour, plus the water) about overloading these. If used to mix reasonable batches, they are excellent mixers and will last a lifetime (I regularly service 40-50 year old A200 model mixers that run very well).

If you don't hear any grinding when it's stalled (which would indicated stripped gears, damaged keys, etc. in the transmission) I would say you are overloading it. Many people want to say the motor is weak when the mixer stalls, but unless the motor has been repeatedly and severely overheated to the point of shorting some of the motor's windings, that's not the case. I suggest finding the recommended capacity chart from Hobart and abiding by it and you'll love your new mixer for years.

Hobart A-200 mixer gets hot and weak. Motor housing gets too hot to keep your hand on it. Service tech told me the motors usually don't go out. What other problem could it be?

I'd say you're most likely overloading the mixer. This mixer, and others similar in size, are frequently overloaded by people making pizza dough. If you are making dough, keep in mind the A-200's capacity is 9 lb. of 40% A.R. pizza dough, mixed for 5 minutes maximum. If you need to mix longer, the batch must be cut down even smaller, but I don't even know if you're mixing dough.

Try running the mixer unloaded (i.e. nothing in the bowl) for ten minutes or more and see if it gets hot. If it still gets hot, the motor's start circuit (varies depending upon age of the A-200; Hobart used numerous motors in the A-200 over the years, incorporating different starting circuits) most likely has problems. If it doesn't get hot when operating unloaded, then you're probably overheating the mixer by overloading it.

Ibought a hobart n 50 mixer took it oversaes used a 700 watt step down transformer to work it but after a few minutes it over heats is there a certain trans former to be used for it thank you

Assuming the mixer is overheating (and not the transformer), first check (with a multimeter) the voltage being supplied to the mixer from the transformer and ensure it is near 120V. Next, do you know the powerline frequency in the country you're in? The mixer (assuming it came from US) was designed for 60Hz US power. Many other countries use 50Hz, which could cause overheating if the mixer is used heavily. When 60Hz equipment is used on 50Hz power, it normally must be "derated" meaning it must be "underworked" as compared to its original capabilities.

Be sure to test the voltage going to the mixer, from the transformer, not only when the mixer is off, but be certain to test it in use, mixing whatever it is you are mixing -bottom line is to be sure the transformer continues to output 120V under load, with the mixer loading the transformer.

If all is OK with the power going to the mixer, then the problem is either in the mixer or the problem is how it is being used. What are you mixing with it - are you overworking the mixer? Does the mixer always overheat or only with particularly demanding jobs (cut down batch size in this case). What gear are you mixing in? If overheating in second gear, try mixing the same batch in first gear. If you have or can find a user's manual, it probably gives reccommended batch sizes for various typical products you might mix, be sure to follow these recommendations and "derate" for 50Hz if necessary.

It's possible the motor is weak from a long life spent working hard. A weak motor will draw excessive current and overheat. Where is the mixer hottest? The front at the gearbox/transmission or the rear where the motor is located? Maybe the transmission is lacking lubracation and needs a grease change. There a many possibilities for your mixer to overheat, and I hope this helps.

Middle better comes loose

Try placing some "braces" rubber bands around the shafts of the beaters. This should tighten the hold of the shaft with the mixer and keep them more straight.

Loud and throws flour all over

Do you find the motor running too fast at the lowest setting? Then you need to bring it to someone to adjust the low speed setting. If you are preparing double batches you are over loading the mixer and/or using too fast a speed setting to mix. Don't try to double recipes just because the bowl can handle the volume, the motor cannot and will not last very long if stressed mixing dough frequently.
