I do not think there is a problem with the player but all I can think is there could be some drivers missing on your Windows.
Alternatively can you connect the player to a different PC and see whether it works?
Also can you please check whether any drivers (USB) need to be updated on the device manager?

The Philips GoGear 2GB MP3 Video Player, Black, SA3025/37, gives a ok to disconnect everytime I plug in the USP to my computer.

Whenever you are disconnecting the gogear from your computer please try to use the safe exit before the device is pulled off. in your tool bar click on safe removal harware and stop the function, you wll receive a script 'you can remove safely ' Also check to see that the device is not loaded with unwanted programmes not recognised by go ger except through the software recommended.reset the go gear by pressing on the small button below and try again.I hope this will help, good day

Repairing it

Get the updated version of the Device Manager from Philips website, and THEN run the repair. If your PC isn't recognizing the device, a normal repair is hard to do, so you have to follow my bootleg instructions:
Triple Reset for Philips’ GoGear:

Disconnect the Go Gear from computer. Press the reset pinhole until the player turns off. Hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If this pop-up does not appear, reset the player again WHILE connected to the computer. Open the Philips Device Manager, and go to Repair Tab. Reset the player one more time while connected to computer. Follow the repair instructions.

After repair is complete, upgrade the firmware for this player. Will erase all the songs, but you should be good to go again.
