Now that you have started this application, try disabling the antivirus and disconnect from the net. If the operation finishes in a couple of hrs, its OK, 'cos it must be busy defragmenting your HDD and the larger the capacity of the HDD, it will take that much more time. If the PC hangs, then no other option but to manually restart, and might need your recovery disc to boot properly. Let it do its work as long as the laptop does not hang. It will sort itself out.............sodeep

Improper computer maintenance may result in slow PC. To fix computer running slow you are required to clean junk and windows errors from your PC using a System Utilities program.
To download a reliable System Utilities, go to famous website download.cnet and search there Reginout. Which I personally use and recommend the friends. After downloading run all of its tools one by one except Internet Optimizer, to clean all the junk and error files from your computer.

Power cable at rear of sony vaio pcv desktop sparking and not starting up

Stop using it. Bring it to a repair shop ASAP. You need your PSU replaced and if you keep using it you'll need your motherboard replaced as well. In fact if you keep using it you could burn all of your internal components out.

I have a sony vaio pcv-L400 when I turn it on it says: disk boot failture, insert system disk what can I do I dont have the system disk

That message means that, for one reason or another, the computer can no longer see it's hard drive. The hard drive may have failed, or it might just not be firmly connected (especially if you recently moved the computer).

PC runs slow. Only has 512 RAM. Is there space for more? Machine is a Sony VAIO, about 7 yrs old. Model PCV 2234

1. Wait the long 5 minutes for your computer to boot. Once you're on the desktop, go to the start menu. Select "run..." Type "msconfig" (no quotes) into the box. The Microsoft system configuration utility should pop up (if you're on Windows XP, Windows 2K users visit: www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm

Once this handy tool pops up go to the "Startup" tab...
You will see a list of every process that runs on system startup. Some of these should look familiar; if you know what a program on this list is and you know you don't want it loading on system startup, uncheck it. There will probably be items on the list that you don't recognize. Any of the things on this list can be googled; you'll find a page which explains what a process is, and if it's vital to the system or not. Anything non-essential or unwanted should just be unchecked. Without having to load all that additional garbage your aging computer should boot up much faster (depending on how many processes you disabled). When you exit the msconfig utility you'll see a message about restarting now or later; you are not required to restart right after you do this.

My friend has a Sony VAIO Digital Studio PCV-RX850 desktop that is not online yet, but has very slow startup issues. What can be done?

The best thing to do is remove as many "Startup" programs as you can. START>>RUN>>msconfig & enter, then go to the Startup Tab, and disable, as many things there, that you absolutely do not need, you really do not need many things starting, as you can simply start them later, also go to Services, and check Hide Microsoft Services. Here too, disable anything and set to manual. Now RAM the more the better, also ensure you have at least 25% of your hard drive free. Defragment, and do a disk cleanup too. this should help a lot.

In middle disk clean up. Select disk cleanup and run. The other area is at bottom of properties menue, Index or compress. This might squezz more space by compressing data.
