Samsung 40 inch 2008 tv. the picture goes dark but still visible. images smear in the horizontal. after a time the picture reverts to normal how long varies. how can i fix or is screen dying?

This problem is normally the Vertical filter capacitors. You need to have them changed before it burns out the Vertical Chip.

Try removing signal cable and refitting at both ends.
Signal cable also could be faulty.

I had a very similar problem, TV was 1 day old! Samsung engineer came out and replaced the motherboard - all sorted now.

I just had my HP-R4252 repaired on 12.05.09 with a similar problem. The picture is covered in horizonal, broken lines and the color is predominately red. They lines are grouped together in large bands across the screen.

The tech replaced the Y-Buffer boards (Up) and (Low) in about 20 minutes.

This not repairable,it a LCD screen have minor pixels cracks in the LCD screen itself,some body hit the LCD Screen with somethings.
