I have a Uniden 1735. The answering machine wont work even though it confirms my message etc. It says the answering machine is on but an old message comes on - it doesn't record. Help!

There are a number of ways that you could do this that range from secret agent technology to gee-whiz gear that you could hand-build yourself, but it sounds to me as if you just want to preserve the message and place it on your new phone (grin) so let us keep it simple.

Any Radio Shack can sell you a suction-cup mic that will plug into any recording device including the sound in jack on your computer. These are cheap, and best of all make very good recordings as long as there is not a lot of background nose in the room you are recording from.

Buy one, attach it to a regular phone handset and call your house. Just before the announce message begins to play, start recording. When it finishes, stop recording.

If you did this with a digital voice recorder you can simply play it back to your new answering machine while it is in message record mode. You might want to MP3 the recording so you have it forever as well...

1. Press and hold down the announce button.
2. You will hear record announcement after the tone.
3. Once you hear record announcement after the tone continue holding the relase button and record your message.
4. When you are done recording release the release button.
5. To hear your recorded message press and hold the release button and release after you have heard your message.
6. If you are not pleased with your recorded message, repeat the steps obove.

Yeah, I've wasted all morning messing with this. My personal outgoing message keeps reverting back to default. I just got off the phone with RCA and here's the fix for that part of the problem. Go into "Configure Out-Going Announcement" (page 23) and then select "personal," This finally made it stay there. The number I called for help is 1-800-511-3180, or 1-866-285-4651. Good luck!

Record a Personal Greeting
1. Access the answering system from any handset. Wait until the system finishes its announcements, or press 5 (Stop) to skip them.

2. Press 8 (RecNewGreeting).

3. Wait for the system to say "Record greeting," then begin speaking.

4. When you're finished, press 8 to stop recording. The system plays back your new greeting.

5. To keep this greeting, press End. To re-record it, go back to step 2.
